The 9th National Sports Festival 2022 taking place in Quang Ninh Province ended recently. Khanh Hoa Province’s sports delegation gained 6 gold medals, 11 silver medals and 12 bronze medals, ranking 32nd out of 65 delegations.

Khanh Hoa’s sports delegation had targeted to achieved 7 to 10 gold medals and finish at the 22nd position on the medal table. The delegation tried to achieve the same number of gold medals and same rank as they got at the 9th festival. This was considered as a reasonable target. In 2020 and 2021, although Khanh Hoa’s sports sector was negatively impacted by Covid-19, it basically fulfilled its targets. Even at the recent 31st SEA Games, many Khanh Hoa athletes were called up to the national teams; many of them achieved high achievements. That was also the basis for the target of Khanh Hoa’s sports at the 9th festival.

As said by Nguyen Tuan Thanh, deputy director of the Department of Culture and Sports, the achievements of Khanh Hoa’s sports delegation didn’t meet its target for the 9th National Sports Festival due to some subjective and objective factors. Some athletes displayed excellently during practice, but they failed to do the same at the festival due to pressure. For example, Khanh Hoa’s indoor volleyball team couldn’t get the gold medal as they expected after losing to Military, who had set their target of placing in the top 4 and so played with confortable spirit. In athletics, young athlete Tran Nhat Hoang had been expected to win gold in his forte, men’s 400m. However, after his success at the 30th SEA Games, Hoang has suffered injuries and has not fully recovered. Therefore, he couldn’t perform at his best and only finished second.

Meanwhile, although martial art was not the focus of Khanh Hoa at this year’s national sport festival because Hanoi, Military and Ho Chi Minh City were too strong, the fact that Khanh Hoa martial art athletes won 5 silver medals and 6 bronze medals was considered a success.

Besides the unexpected results, the 9th National Sports Festival also saw the effort of Khanh Hoa athletes in beach volleyball, body building, muay Thai, and dance sport. Khanh Hoa dominated beach volleyball in men’s and women’s events; they successfully defended their gold medals in both events. This year was also the first time Khanh Hoa athletes had made their debut in triathlon. They won 1 gold medal and 1 silver medal, exceeding the expectation.

According to Thanh, the sports sector will hold a review meeting with the teams and the training center. The sector will also build plan to improve the quality of movement sports activities.
