The recently-organized Chinese chess contest, which is among the sports contests of Khanh Hoa Province’s 9th Sports Festival, marked the return of Khanh Hoa’s sports after a long hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The successful organization of the Chinese chess contest, the 3rd event of the provincial 9th Sports Festival, proved the efforts of the province’s sports sector and the localities in the province in maintaining this sports movement.

The provincial Department of Culture and Sports started to plan for the return of movement sports activities after the province issued the plan for the adaption to the pandemic prevention and control. Most of these sports activities are the events of the provincial Sports Festival, which can be organized easily in compliance with the pandemic prevention and control measures. Most of the participants of the Chinese chess contest are above 18 years old and have been vaccinated against COVID-19.

The contest drew 36 players from eight districts, towns, and cities over the province. Nha Trang City, Dien Khanh District, and Ninh Hoa Town have been the familiar localities that often join the Chinese chess contest. This year marks the first appearance of the players from Khanh Son District. Especially, Ngo Anh Tuan of Khanh Son team unexpectedly won against Le Thanh Cong, one of the excellent Chinese chess players of Nha Trang.

Dr. Tran Cam Long, an excellent Chinese chess player of Khanh Hoa, highly appreciated the organization of this year’s contest with the participation of the players from many localities across the province amid the outbreak of COVID-19. This year is also the first time the contest has had a category for players under 35 years old. As said by Tran Cam Long, currently, the Chinese chess movement for players under 18 years old is developing strongly in Vietnam. The fact that Khanh Hoa’s Chinese chess contest 2021 incorporated the under-35 category into the tournament is expected to be the basis for the development of Chinese chess movement among young players in  Khanh Hoa.

At the end of the contest, the organization board gave three medal sets to the excellent individuals and teams.
