After more than ten years of implementing Resolution 08 dated 2011 of the Politburo on "Strengthening the leadership of the Party, creating a strong development in physical exercise and sports until 2020", Nha Trang City has had made a strong change in physical exercise and sports movement.

Public sports develop strongly

Reportedly, Nha Trang City People's Committee has installed many fitness equipment and sports facilities at some public places and requested the citizens to comply with COVID-19 prevention and control regulations. Nguyen Van Hai (Thai Thong Village, Vinh Thai Commune) often do morning exercise at the beach park along Tran Phu Street. Amid COVID-19 resurgence, he wears mask while doing exercise with fitness equipment and sports facilities at the park. He says that in order to stay healthy amid the complicated development of COVID-19, people should do more exercise and sports and follow prevention and control measures in new situations of the pandemic. According to Hai, currently, he and other people are wearing masks and maintaining distance with each other when doing exercise at the park.

After more than ten years of implementing Resolution 08, Nha Trang’s public physical exercise and sports movement has developed widely. People from different backgrounds join the movement with diverse forms of activities. The city maintains many quality movement sports competitions, such as: 11-a-side football tournaments, basketball, badminton, teenagers’ and children's football, and martial arts (karate, taekwondo, traditional martial arts). The movement has also developed strongly in schools. 100% of schools in the city have extracurricular programs and have physical education teachers. Physical education is carried out in many forms; periodic medical checkups and health care for pupils are available at schools.

Every year, around 24 to 28 high schools are hailed as province-level advanced unit in physical training. 100% of schools organize their own sports competitions or participate in city-level or province-level sports tournaments. 50% of primary and junior high schools take part in sports tournaments at city and provincial level.

The fact that Nha Trang has maintained the organization of lifeguard training classes and summer swimming classes to prevent child drowning is the basis for the province's sports sector to organize and maintain the annual swimming tournament since 2018.

Getting many achievements

Nha Trang's system of cultural and sports institutions is relatively complete with enough facilities, training equipment, practice places, etc. This is a strength of Nha Trang’s sport movement. Nha Trang City Center of Sports Training and Competition has one multi-function hall (for martial arts and badminton competitions), one table tennis club, one fitness club, three tennis courts, one basketball court , one swimming pool, and one 11-a-side football field. Every year, the center organizes more than 40 movement sports tournaments, attracting thousands of players. In the 2015-2020 period, in combination with the implementation of the program on building new-style rural areas, the city invested in 31 cultural facilities, including seven cultural and sports centers. As for traditional martial arts, Nha Trang has 37 clubs, dojos and manage 72 members, coaches (from third dan), and more than 1,500 practitioners.

Thanks to organizing regularly the tournaments of cross-country, football, badminton, martial arts, etc., Nha Trang has created a source of quality athletes, helping the city to rank first in the provincial sports tournaments for many times as well as to represent the province in junior tournaments and national championships. Nha Trang’s sports teams have brought many achievements to Khanh Hoa’s sports. From 2018 to 2020, hundreds of traditional martial arts practitioners from the clubs and dojos in Nha Trang achieved nearly 40 medals, 33 of which were gold; took part in national junior tournaments and national championships, getting nearly 50 medals of all kinds, 12 gold medals in particular.

In the past ten years, Nha Trang’s physical exercise and sports movement developed strongly, according to Nguyen Tuan Thanh, deputy director of Khanh Hoa Provincial Department of Culture and Sports. The authorities at many levels created favorable conditions for investment mechanisms, facilities, and investment in sports from external resources. In the time to come, the city needs to promote effectively public contribution in physical exercise and sports activities; expand the scale and improve the quality of public physical exercise and sports activities; keep improving the quality of physical education and create conditions to foster sports talent in schools. The city also needs to give instruction in promoting the development of different types of physical exercise and sports clubs at grass roots level; promote the practice movement in forces; and encourage establishment of nursing and rehabilitation facilities by physical exercise and sports practice.

Nha Trang now has 162 physical exercise and sports cubs. These clubs are also the venues for public sports competitions at grass roots level. There are around 50 city-level competitions and 100 commune-level competitions. The city also supports the provincial departments and sectors in the province to hold 15 to 20 competitions per year. Some folk sports and games such as stick pushing, tug of war, heavy object carrying, sack jumping, etc. are maintained.
