Khanh Hoa's sports sector develops in breadth and depth

Recently, Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee held a conference to review 10 years of implementation of the strategy on developing Vietnam's sports and physical exercise towards 2020 in the province.

Recently, Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee held a conference to review 10 years of implementation of the strategy on developing Vietnam’s sports and physical exercise towards 2020 in the province. The results, evaluation and instructions of the province’s leadership and the judgment of the experts at the conference suggested a new direction for the development of Khanh Hoa’s sports sector in the future.

Achievements of Khanh Hoa’s sports

Over 10 years of implementing the strategy, at present, 35.5% of Khanh Hoa’s population practice exercise and sports regularly; 36.2% of households are sports ones. Every year, the province’s sports sector holds 20 province-level contests, 160 district-level contests, and hosts more than 10 national-level contests. Currently, the province has 15 sports federations and associations; 400 sports clubs and sports practice places. 100% of schools at all levels have provided formal and extra-curricular physical education; 60% of the provincial armed force units have ensured facilities for cadres and soldiers to practice exercise and sports.

Since 2010, Khanh Hoa Province’s has made some investment in high-achievement sports and increased the number of high-achievement sports from 9 to 13. Each year, the provincial sports teams participate in around 70 national and international tournaments; achieve nearly 300 sets of medals. More than 50 athletes were given national level-1 title; 30 athletes were given master title. Khanh Hoa provincial volleyball team is one of the three strongest volleyball teams in Vietnam. The provincial cross-country team won many consecutive national championships. Especially, in 2019, one cross-country athlete of Khanh Hoa was called for the national team and won three SEA Games gold medals in individual and team’s events. One table-tennis coach of Khanh Hoa led the national team to gold medal at a SEA Games. One athlete of Khanh Hoa contributed to the achievements of Vietnam’s para weightlifting team with an Asian record and was qualified for Paralympic London 2012.

Khanh Hoa’s sports need more investment

In addition to the aforementioned achievements, there are still many difficulties which Khanh Hoa’s sports sector needs to overcome, such as lack of facilities and low monetary-policy rate, especially in remote areas.

As stated by Lam Quang Thanh, former deputy director of the General Department of Sports at the review conference, Khanh Hoa has great potential to become one of the strongest sports centers in the country. However, the financial problems have partly limited the development of Khanh Hoa’s sports. In the future, the provincial sports sector should pay attention to the investment in sports infrastructure; promote public contributions; develop recreational sports, water sports and connect them with tourism services in order to promote internal values and create a lever for the province's socio-economic development.

Nguyen Dac Tai, Permanent Deputy Chairman of Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee, directed the provincial sectors and localities to raise the awareness of the party committees and authorities at all levels about the development of sports and physical exercise; improve leadership and management capacity; step up training of human resources to meet the development needs in the new period; increase investment in sports; and so on.
