Vietnam played with 3-4-3 formation and mostly outplayed the opponent. Most of the shots of Vietnam were taken from outside the penalty area. Vietnam went ahead the run of play with a strike from Cong Phuong in the 11th minute. Anh Duc doubled the lead for Vietnam with a strike in the last minute of the injury time of the first half.

After the break, Laos started to attack more in the second half; meanwhile Coach Park Hang-seo fielded three substitutes. Vietnam had third goal thanks to Quang Hai’s beautiful long-range shot on 68 minutes. Nearly ten minutes later, Cong Phuong rifled the ball into the net for Vietnam, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
The three goals helped Vietnam to win the game and contemporarily top Group A.
