Nha Trang Sea Festival gathers a lot of activities featuring the coastal land, people and life. With that meaning, a contest of basket paddling – basket swinging will be held in this year’s festival for fishermen.
The tournament will bring viewers good-looking performances showing strength, techniques and skills or real fishermen.

Basket is an indispensable thing to fishermen. They can use it for inshore fisheries. To offshore fishing, baskets become supports for their boat to do fishing in larger area. Sometimes, basket is used to carried necessities or fuel for fishing boats.
“Basket paddling is the manual act of propelling a basket using the motion of oars in the water. Standing firmly on a basket and paddling it is very difficult and requires a lot of skills. Different from paddling, basket swinging use the bob of water to create power for motion”, said a fisherman.
The tournament will be competed by fishermen from coastal localities, including Nha Trang, Cam Ranh, Ninh Hoa, Cam Lam and Van Ninh. It will take place on the sea opposite to 22 Tran Phu Street at 6:30, June 11. Basket paddling is made on a 100-meter race while basket swinging on 200 meters. Through the tournament, a part of fishermen’s life can be seen.
Four years ago, a similar tournament of basket paddling and basket swinging was held in Nha Trang. That event attracted a lot of audience who were locals and tourists. With strange-looking and funny actions of competitors when paddling and swinging baskets, it brought them laughter then.
