Musician Do Tri Dung whose father‘s native place is Quang Nam was born and grown up in Nha Trang. In 1954, he regrouped in the North and lived in the Harbor City of Hai Phong. After graduating University of Ha Noi, he worked in Institute of Educational Sciences (belonging to Ministry of Education and Training). Being gifted with music, he composed songs for children, some of which were broadcast over Viet Nam and Ha Noi radio station.
In 1971, he was recruited to be charge of the program of “Bo Hoa Nho” in Viet Nam T.V station. This is a turning point in his life to music. He could learn much from his former musicians. Many songs children are fond of are “Tinh Ban”, “Qua trung biet noi”, Nghe hoa”… The most interesting song is “Trang sang san nha em” (versified by Tran Dang Khoa”. After some days having been on Viet Nam television, there were hundreds of letters sent from the North asking for the repeat.
Early in 1976, musician Do Tri Dung was appointed to work in Nha Trang T.V station (Khanh Hoa Province). Because it was just established, he was both a musician and a reporter. Getting information in Districts, he actively supported the movement of literature and arts in Districts.
Early in 1980, he worked in department of literature and arts in Nha Trang T.V station. At that time, he had much time to compose music. Beside songs for children, he also wrote songs for adults on many subjects, especially on the subject of the sea. Khanh Hoa seashore is 200 km in length, expanding from Dai Lanh to Cam Ranh. We can say that we can see his footprints everywhere on the seashore. He can understand the features of different regions. All the features have come into his music. He has been written over 40 songs of the sea since 1985, many of which have won high prizes of national, provincial and local Associations for Music. The typical songs are “Con Cong gio”, “Loi To Quoc”, “Nguyen lam con song”, Bay sac cau vong”… His songs are beautiful, full of romance… Many musicians remarked Do Tri Dung is the man who is deeply in love with the sea.
Beside music, he also has a talent in painting. He sketches very beautifully. He now has hundreds of sketches of artists from all parts of the country. Many of them appeared on newspaper. He always catches the souls of everybody in his sketches. Looking at the sketches, with some sketchy lines, people will know that what their characteristics are.
He has had nearly 1,000 pieces of music for over 30 years of compose. Of which, there have been 500 songs for children, 300 of love songs. He was given a medal “For educational cause”. From 1995 to 2002, he continually received the prizes of Viet Nam Music association, National committee for literature and Arts association. In 2003, in the contest to welcome the anniversary of Khanh Hoa of 350 years, he won the third prize. He is at present in his sixties but he is the same as he was. He still likes travelling, composing music. He confided: “Composing and music is my happiness. Music makes me healthy and young forever.
