Nha Trang City Comrade Associate has just held a trash-for-plant exchange day at Tan Lap 2 Primary School, Nha Trang City, contributing to raising children’s awareness of environmental protection from small acts.

Early in the morning, a fifth-grader Kieu Gia Minh brought more than 3kg of waste paper to his school. “I have joined some environmental protection activities such as “No littering”,  “Put trash in its place”, etc. I have collected waste paper at home to join the trash-for-plant exchange program.”

Like Kieu Gia Minh, other kids at Tan Lap 2 Primary School brought waste items such as waste paper, plastic bottles and cans in exchange for various of cute plants, namely cactus plants, snake plants, ghost plants, etc.

1K ids at Tan Lap 2 Primary School are excited to join the trash-for-plant exchange.

Truong Tan Quan, Class 5/4, has become more aware of the responsibility to protect the environment through such activities as clean-up and tree cultivation. Joining the trash-for-plant exchange program, he knows more about the benefits of waste classification and helps reduce trash and harm to the environment.

As many as 1,558kg of waste paper, 42kg of cans and 48kg of plastics in total were sent to the program in the morning. The proceeds from the waste sales will go to children’s books in advantaged schools in Nha Trang City, according to Chu Minh Phuong, Deputy Secretary of Nha Trang Youth Union.

This is the second year the activity has been held in order to educate environmental protection, teaching the habit of saving and waste classification. Each kid will be an environmental conservation propagandist for their friends and families. This is a practical and meaningful model, attracting the participation of many kids. The model has been expanded in schools in the city based on specific conditions.

Besides the trash-for-plant exchange, Nha Trang City Youth Union and Comrade Associate have boosted environmental protection propaganda via other activities with children’s playground made from recycled items; beach clean-up, removal of illegal ads, etc, helping to promote environmental awareness among children and teenagers, contributing to enhancing urban civilization.
