Ninh Hoa General Hospital, Khanh Hoa Province, has 335 patient beds; the Township Medical Center, including Ninh Sim Clinic, has 160 beds together with 27 commune and ward medical stations. According to the township Division of Natural Resources & Environment, medical waste mounts to 183m3 of liquid/day and night and 389kg of solid/day. Timely handling procedures of medical waste are required to deal up an increase in medical waste to prevent environmental pollution risks, especially during the on-going Covid-19 pandemic.

In 2020, 33,523kg of solid medical infectious waste from Ninh Hoa General Hospital was collected and treated, including 10,693kg treated at Ninh Hoa General Hospital and 8,321kg treated in cluster for Van Ninh District Medical Center, Ninh Hoa Town Medical Center and some private clinics. Solid medical infectious waste is treated, using microwaving technology integrated with crushing and cutting processes.

 
Ninh Hoa Town Medical Center collected, transported, stored and treated hazardous medical wastes (4,926 kg/ year) in 2020 in accordance with the guidance of the Circular No. 36 by the Ministry of Natural Resources & Environment on hazardous waste management. 
 
Ninh Hoa Town Medical Center in 2020 signed a contract with Ninh Hoa General Hospital to collect and treat infectious hazardous medical waste and Ninh Hoa Urban Environment Company to handle normal waste. Non-infectious hazardous waste is collected by Hau Sanh Production &Trading Co., Ltd. once a year, according to Tran Chi, Deputy Director of Ninh Hoa Town Medical Center.
 
Stringent treatment process
 
In 2021, Ninh Hoa Town Medical Center has built a specific plan on its health care waste treatment, maintained the medical waste cluster treatment; signed a contract with Centekco Consulting & Technical Services Co., Ltd. to conduct annual environmental monitoring.
 
Ninh Hoa General Hospital has built a plan on waste treatment and issued a medical waste management plan in the fight against Covid-19 in 2021. Accordingly, the waste from the screening and isolation areas is considered as hazardous waste that needs to be collected in plastic bags and kept in tightly closed yellow dustbins with signs of biohazardous waste.
 
Safety is assured for medical staff during waste collection, transportation and treatment. Health care waste from isolation areas is sorted, collected, stored, transported and treated in accordance with the Ministry of Health’s Circular 58 and the Ministry of Natural Resources & Environment on medical waste management, according to Dang Quy Son, Deputy Director of Ninh Hoa General Hospital.
