Khanh Hoa Journalists’ Association cooperated with  Nguoi Lam Bao Magazine (agency under Vietnam Journalists’ Association) held the 7th press conference on fake news and core values of the press on November 18 with the attendance of more than 200 delegates, including journalists and press researchers.

According to Doan Minh Long, Chairman of Khanh Hoa Journalists’ Association, communications today are facing fake news and disinformation shared on social media. They are spreading confusion about facts and current events, thus causing challenges for journalism in the fight against the global phenomenon of fake news.

Together with social development, misinformation or fake news seems to be accelerating, adversely affecting the sound social environment, especially among young people and gullible Internet users who have limited data evaluation and verification skills.

Therefore, journalism is in a state of considerable flux and needs to take a leading role in enhancing the public orientation. When given approval in principle by Khanh Hoa Party Committee and People’s Committee, the Journalists’ Association has called for presentations from journalists’ association branches. More than 30 presentations and interviews on the global issue of fake news and core values of journalism were sent to the conference. 80% of the presentations were from journalists at representative offices of central news agencies and news agencies in Ho Chi Minh City located in Khanh Hoa.

Fake and misleading news is of great social concern. In the framework of the conference, journalists and reporters focused on false news in the present time, social media user behavior and Internet users in posting and sharing fake and misleading news, and solutions, especially journalists’ political awareness, consistency, skills and ethical qualities when having access to news sources; and regulations to deal with social media cyber crime in the Industry 4.0.

The conference gave a comprehensive view of true communication in an effort to minimize fake and malicious news posted and shared on social networks and fabricated stories from hostile forces or agitators taking advantage of the media to get personal benefits or harm the national construction and development in the new era.
