A project on a saltwater intrusion prevention dam  over Cai River has been allocated funding for development. Bidding procedures are underway for the construction inauguration scheduled on September 25, according to the leader of Khanh Hoa Development Project Management Board.

Project of expectations

The project on a damp to hold back the intrusion of seawater into Cai River was approved in 2008 but has remained undeveloped due to unresolved funding. The project has been allocated VND212 billion by the central budget from the capital of the target program to respond to climate change and green growth in the period 2016 - 2020. The total project investment capital is VND759.5 billion, including the central support capital and the reciprocal capital of the province.

The temporary dam made of gabions at Vinh Phuong Bridge to block seawater is frequently reinforced. However, salty seawater creeps into Cai River every dry and drought season, affecting water quality for daily use and irrigation in Dien Khanh District and Nha Trang City. Therefore, the new dam over Cai River, Nha Trang City to combat salt water intrusion is of much expectation.

Chau Ngo Anh Nhan, Director of Khanh Hoa Development Project Management Board says the new dam will hold back the intrusion of seawater and protect water quality for some 500,000 residents in Nha Trang City and partly in Dien Khanh District; serve tourism activities and irrigation for 2,000ha of agricultural land on the 2 river banks and the operation of Nha Trang Fiber Factory during drought seasons.

Besides, the project is designed to connect transport over Cai River following the ring road 2 to facilitate travel and provide a considerable stimulus to socioeconomic development in Nha Trang City, contributing to maintaining the water level, improving ecological environment, serving waterway traffic, developing tourism along Cai River; regulating partly water flow into Tac and Quan Truong Rivers and thus improving the urban environment in the west and south of the city.

Construction to mark Provincial Party Committee Congress

According to the leader of Khanh Hoa Development Project Management Board, the dam is built 75 meters downstream from the railway bridge, connecting the existing residential area of Ngoc Hiep Ward through Ngo Den Street. This multi-purpose project includes a seawater barrier of pillars with gate valves, a lock and a bridge above. Specifically, the dam consists of 5 stainless steel compartments, 30m each, with hydraulic cylinders, valve support beams connecting 2 pillars with a pile foundation; and waterproof steel sheets, 12 to 15m long; 50 cm thick gabions along riverbeds upstream and downstream.

The important structure of the project is a reinforced concrete lock, 67m in length and 7m in width, on the right bank. The valve gate 2 of the lock is with a hydraulic cylinder. The 2-way traffic bridge on the dam consists of 10 spans, 33m long and 26m wide each, has a total length of 400m, including ways leading to the bridge.

Khanh Hoa Development Project Management Board is implementing bidding procedures for the construction inauguration on September 25. The work is to mark the 18th Provincial Party Committee Congress, term 2020 - 2025. “The project is expected to be completed and put into use by the end of 2022. Then the temporary salt prevention dam at Vinh Phuong Bridge will be removed. The Management Board is verifying the origin of the land to submit a compensation plan for the land acquisition of 33 lots and 11 homes expected to move to Ngoc Hiep Resettlement Area in Ngoc Hiep Ward, Nha Trang City,” said Chau Ngo Anh Nhan.
