COVID-19 has left thousands of people in Khanh Hoa Province out of work. Many have lost jobs and could not find new ones.

Facing financial problems

Nguyen Thi Hong, Phuoc Dong Commune, Nha Trang City used to work for Ponaga Joint Stock Company. The company has shut down because there are no tourists and thus terminated a labor contract with her.  “My husband and I used to work in a service and tourism sector, earning more than VND15 million a month. Now, it has gone. We get unemployed and have no pay. My two little children are at home because of school closure. I couldn’t find another job. For more than 2 months, we have used nearly all our saving. We are so worried about how long the situation is going to last,” she said.

According to the leader of the Department of Labor, War Invalids & Social Affairs, there is currently no specific statistics of the unemployed in the province due to the Covid-19 epidemic. More than 3,600 people have registered for unemployment benefits at Khanh Hoa Job Center since the beginning of the year. Specifically, more than 1,600 registered for unemployment benefits on March 1 - 20. Most of them worked in a tourism and service sector. Seasonal and freelance workers are also adversely affected by the Covid-19 outbreak.

Unable to find new jobs

COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in less job opportunities. “I have sought work at 10 coffee shops, but I was refused as they have no demand.” There are still a few vacancies for accountants, guards, garment workers, etc but I have no experience and skills in such fields as my specialty is restaurant management,” says Tran Thanh Truc Quynh.

Nguyen Van Kha, Director of Khanh Hoa Job Center says the job market has been being hit by coronavirus layoffs. Only a few textile, seafood processing and delivery service enterprises have employment demands but for limited workers. There are few job opportunities, especially for those who have just lost jobs.

Since the beginning of the year, Khanh Hoa Job Center has provided constancy, vocational training and orientation for more than 2,000 people. Over 300 have been employed. However, many are not satisfied with the work as it is not tailored to their skills and competence. They accept to take the jobs as a temporary solution during the pandemic.
