Nha Trang University was founded on August 01, 1959 as the Fisheries Faculty of Hanoi Institute of Agriculture and Forestry. In 1966, under a decision of the Prime Minister, the faculty was separated and named the School of Fisheries. In 1977, the school moved from Hai Phong to Nha Trang. In 2006, its name was changed to Nha Trang University.
After 50 years of development, Nha Trang University has been on a sustainable foundation and gradually become a multi-disciplinary and multi-level institution with strong emphasis on fisheries and aquaculture. Before 1990, the university had only 5 fisheries disciplines. At present, it has 26 disciplines for a variety of specializations. From the sole undergraduate level at the beginning, the university currently has 4 training levels from professional certificate to doctorate. The number of its students has increased year by year. It now has about 25,000 students and hundreds of post graduates.
For implementing the national higher education reform plan, in 1990 the university moved from a year-based training system to a revised one by integrating the year-based and the credit systems. The university also has a lecturer staff of high level, including 19 lecturers awarded the titles of People’s Teacher and Meritorious Teacher, 12 professors and associated professors, 60 doctors and 170 masters.
Beside this, the infrastructure of Nha Trang University has developed a lot. In 1990, the school had only two class buildings, covering an area of 12,000m2 with a capacity of 1,500 students. But now, it owns tens of class buildings with 12,000m2 in land, a large dormitory, a sports complex, a modern library with more than 200,000 books and hundreds of networked computers. The university also has invested tens of billion VND to build a mechanical workshop, a processing center, a biological technology and environment center, an experimental farm of aquaculture, a research center for fishing boat and equipment manufacture and some others.
With a significant contribution in training and research, Nha Trang University has been granted by the Government many prestigious awards such as: Second-class Labour Medal in 1986, First-class Labour Medal in 1989, Third-class Independence Medal (1994), Second-class Independence Medal in 1999, First-class Independence Medal in 2004 and Labour Hero in Renovation Period in 2006.
