As many as 150 wild animal species are categorized, illustrated and described in a Pictorial Guide for Quick Identification of Some Wild Animals Protected by Vietnamese Laws and CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
The book is the combined effort of Forest Protection Department of Vietnam and TRAFFIC Southeast Asia, the wildlife trade monitoring network, which works to ensure that trade in wild plants and animals is not a threat to the conservation of nature.
The book is an easy-to-use rapid identification guide to approximately 150 wild animal species with their typical detailed features. It aims to facilitate wildlife trade control, allowing officers to quickly identify the species they encounter, helping to set restrictions on trade in species regarded as endangered or threatened. The book is also based on feedback of nearly 100 officials from the Forest Protection Department, Market Control, Customs and National Parks on commonly traded wildlife published in 2000.
1,000 books, funded by the Royal Danish Embassy and supported technically by the institute, will be sent to law enforcers of Market Control, Customs, the Environmental Police and National Parks nationwide. The Institute of Ecology and Biological Resource has supported the compilation. The effort is intended to motivate commitments to the conservation of wild species.
