Top priority has been given to application of high-tech medical care at Khanh Hoa General Hospital. In late 2008 and early 2009, the hospital put in use two modem devices namely Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) equipment and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scanner worth billions of VND.
Dr. Nguyen Manh Tien, the manager of Khanh Hoa General Hospital said, “Digital subtraction angiography DSA equipment worth 26 billion VND has just been used at the hospital. It is a type of fluoroscopy technique used in interventional radiology to clearly visualize blood vessels in a bony or dense soft tissue environment. Images are produced using contrast medium by subtracting a 'pre-contrast image' or the mask from later images, once the contrast medium has been introduced into a structure.
DSA is useful in the diagnosis and treatment of arterial and venous occlusions, including carotid artery stenosis, pulmonary embolisms and acute limb ischaemia; arterial stenosis, which is particularly useful for potential renal donors in detecting renal artery stenosis and cerebral aneurysms and arterio-venous malformation, says Dr. Huynh Van Thuong, emergency unit, head of Cardiovascular Interventions Group at Khanh Hoa General Hospital.
Reportedly, in order to use the DSA equipment and software, 3 years ago, Khanh Hoa General Hospital sent a group of 9 people including doctors, nurses and technicans led by Dr. Huynh Van Thuong to attend a 2-year course presented by Dr. Vo Thanh Nhan in Cardiovascular Interventions Faculty, Cho Ray Hospital. After the course, Dr. Thuong and his colleagues have successfully applied the technique in many cases. “Patients in Khanh Hoa no longer have to travel to Ho Chi Minh City for a DSA test,” Dr. Thuong said.
Besides DSA, MRI has been performed at Khanh Hoa General Hospital. MRI is primarily a medical imaging technique most commonly used in radiology to visualize the structure and function of the body. It provides detailed images of the body in any plane. MRI is especially useful in neurological (brain), musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and oncological imaging.
MA Luong Linh Ha said, “MRI scans are safe. Unlike X-rays and some other imaging tests, an MRI scan does not use radiation. An MRI scan can create clear pictures of most parts of the body. It is useful for all sorts of reasons where other tests such as X-rays do not give enough information required." It is used to get detailed pictures of the brain and spinal cord, to detect abnormalities and tumors. In clinical practice, MRI is used to distinguish pathologic tissue (such as a brain tumor) from normal tissue. MRI scan is harmless to patients. It uses strong magnetic fields and non-ionizing radiation in the radio frequency range.
Reportedly, since operation in November 2008, MRI scan has been given to 230 cases helping to raise the treatment quality. Thanks to concern of the province, Provincial Health Department as well as great effort of doctors and physicians, residents in Khanh Hoa can benefit much from high-tech medical care. 2009 has come bringing a wish for a year of good health and happiness.
