Among 40,000 species of algae, spirulina catches the most people’s interest due to its amazing nutrition concentration.

Spirulina is one of the most concentrated nutritious foods, containing the highest amount of protein (up to 75% ), 18 essential amino acids including Acginin, histiđin, leuxin, Lizin, Valium, beta caroten, etc…, B-complex vitamins, vitamin E, and numerous minerals. In fact, spirulina contains more beta-carotene than tomatoes. There is some preliminary evidence that spirulina may help protect against cervical cancer, breast cancer due to beta caroten.

According to nutrient researches on this species of , Vitamin E and Beta caroten that are contained in spirulina are used to lower blood cholesterol. Especially, vitamin E are used for a variety of purposes such as reducing risk of coronary artery disease and risk of sudden cardiac arrest, protecting against intestinal neoplasm, Parkinson, asthma, cataract, etc…

Also, spirulina plays vital roles in maintaining good health, especially stimulating the immune system, as a result having antiviral and anticancer effects. This is thought to be due to the high levels of minerals present in this food supplement.

Because it is a rich source of protein and other nutrients, spirulina has been used traditionally as a nutritional supplement by people who cannot obtain sufficient calories or protein through diet alone and by those whose nutritional requirements are higher than normal, such as athletes. Moreover, spirulina is believed to have been a food easy to absorb. 95% protein of spirulina will be absorbed after 18 hours.

Products made from spirulina

Dr. Nguyen Thi Thang at the Nutrition Ward of Khanh Hoa General Hospital said that spirulina yoghurt has been a familiar food for malnourished patients in this hospital. As many as 2,000 jars of yoghurt are monthly consumed at a very low price - 2,500VND/jar.

Other products made from spirulina include tablets and capsules Angel Life made in Thailand under the Japanese technology. It is sold at a price of between VN$72,000 - VN$82,000 per jar; liquid spirulina made by Vinh Hoa Joint - Venture Company (sold at a price of VN$40,000 - VN$45,000 per jar) or product Linavina of Mekophar that is sold at VN$20,000 - VN$22,000.

Recently, Vietnamese Academy of Science and Technology in combination with Detech Technology Development Joint Stock Company has manufactured successfully the product Spir@ cid that is a combination of spirulina, saffron and grape cores can protect against cancers.

To sum up, Spirulina is a high energy food. It is as an answer to the malnutrition problem. However, you should follow your doctor’s instructions when using this product. Because too much protein may cause reduced kidney function; too much vitamins may harm your liver.
