Suoi Dau Livestock Farm, 17 kilometres apart from the center of Nha Trang city, is located in an area of 120 hectare in Suoi Tan commune, Cam Lam district. The livestock farm specializes in breeding livestock for biological research and production of Nha Trang Institue of Vaccines and Medical Biologicals. The livestock farm is raising a number of horses to produce antiserum against tetanus, rabies, diphtheria and snakebite. Besides, the farm also has thousands of rabbits, and white mouses, which can supply for research institutes and universities across the country.
The farm now has about 300 horses. With a 30-hectare meadow, a 30-hectare grazing-land and horse cages, the horse breeding section makes up more than 50% of the area of the farm. A horse eats averagely 14 – 20 kg green fodder a day; thus, about 4 ton green folder is consumed by the herd of horses a day. After being chosen and raised in a clean environment for six months, 60% of the horses are fit for producing antiserum. The unfit horses are slaughtered. Their bones are used for making horse bone glue.
Horse bone contains calcium phosphate, keratin and ossein. According to Oriental medicine, horse bone glue is a precious remedy which is sweet, healthy, nutritious and good for bones. According to Western medicine, it is rich in protein (80%), calcium, phosphor, and acid amin and can help hepatitis and nephritis treatment, reduce cholesterol, give people an appetite and supply energy. An recent essay by Doctor Nguyen Lan Dinh said that horse bone glue is good for everyone, even pregnant or lactating women, six-month-old or more children, teenagers, women in critical age, the old and recovering patients.
There have been many people recovering from diseases owing to using horse bone glue up to now. Besides, many people are reported to get better, have a good appetite and no more sleeplessness after drinking it.
Especially, horse bone glue can help athletes exercise better without eating too much.
How is horse bone glue made? Head of Suoi Dau Livestock Farm Tran Van Tuu said that horse bone glue is made from boiled horse bones which are dried and cooked continuously by wood and rice husk for seven days. A set of horse bones can give 1.5 – 2 kg condensed horse bone glue. At present, one a limitted number of horse bone glue is being sold for test with the price of VND100,000/gram. In the future, its price surely will increase sharply. Reportedly, Nha Trang Institue of Vaccines and Medical Biologicals plans to develop trade name and market for their horse bone glue.
