Long, an owner of a big wood depot in Nha Trang City recalled, “More than 10 years ago, 1m3 of Dalbergia boniana cost about 20 million VND, equal to barian kingwood or Baria dalbergia. Now, the price climbs up to 700 million VND or even higher in the northern region. The fever for dalbergia boniana started in 2005 and reached the highest pitch in mid-2006 when a large number of wood traders from China, Korea and some rich people in Hanoi searched for dalbergia boniana in central provinces and Highlands.

The scientific name is Dalbergia bouruana gagu. It is fabaceous. Many species of Dalbergia are important timber trees, valued for their decorative and often fragrant wood and rich in aromatic oils. The most famous of these are the rosewoods, so-named because of the smell, but several other valuable woods are yielded by the genus. It is mostly distributed in central region and highlands. For the great value, it is banned from exploitation for trade.

Interiors in imperial palaces used to be made of Dalbergia boniana as it is a valuable flavoring and drug. In recent years, rich people in China have used Dalbergia boniana to make coffins or embalm bodies like kings in the past. In addition, linked to Buddhism’s stories, dalbergia boniana is used to make strings of beads worth some millions of USD.

All things of Dalbergia boniana were sold out. Dalbergia boniana trees seem to disappear from the Hon Chao Mount. However, forest warden or authorities have had no methods no deal with the destruction. Local leaders said, though it becomes an alarming matter but the settlement of the situation is beyond their ability. If nothing is done about it right now, Dalbergia boniana will be soon destroyed, even faster than aquilaria trees leading to rapid exhaustion of Dalbergia boniana.
