Nha Trang farmers focus on improving value of agricultural products

In the context that the area of ​​land for cultivation and aquaculture is shrinking, farmers in Nha Trang gradually adapts by improving the value of agricultural products and implusing agricultural production activities associated with services.

With a small agricultural production area, the economic models of Nha Trang farmers are different when the vegetable gardens, mushroom plots, bird's nest houses ... have only square meters in area instead of hectares as many other places. For example, Tran Thanh Son (in Vinh Thanh commune) is known by the model of growing orchids; Pham Van Dong (in Phuoc Dong commune) specializes in providing ornamental plants and bonsai; Nguyen Van Phuc (in Vinh Phuong commune) specializes in growing VietGAP vegetables; the model of raising and processing bird's nests of Hoang Thi Tuyet (in Phuoc Long ward), To Thi Thia (in Vinh Hoa ward)... Those does not occupy too much area but still brings high economic efficiency. For example, just with 200m2 of mushroom cultivation, Nha Trang farmers can earn an average of 10 million VND/month. Nguyen Tan Lau (Vinh Phuoc ward), who was honored as an excellent Vietnamese farmer, earns up to billions of dong per year with offshore fishing; the excellent Vietnamese farmer Le Minh Quyen (in Vinh Nguyen ward) with dozens of cages for grouper and lobster farming not only for billions in income but also a familiar address of many other farmers to visit and learn..

In addition, agriculture in Nha Trang also has strengths in exploiting experience tourism and community tourism services. In the context that the city's agricultural land area is increasingly shrinking, many economic models are no longer suitable and need to be changed, Nha Trang City People's Committee has innovated and improved the efficiency of activities such as consulting, support, service, vocational training for farmers to develop production and business. The Farmers Support Fund alone has lent 235 households more than 8 billion VND to implement 77 projects. In which, most of the loan capital is used by farmers to upgrade and convert to more suitable production models to the new situation.

According to Nguyen Van Hoa - Vice Chairman of Nha Trang City Farmers' Association . The whole city has only about 1,200 hectares of agricultural land. The common point in most effective economic models of Nha Trang farmers is that farmers have applied science and technology, gradually changing crops and livestock to suit the conditions; focus on crops and livestock with high economic value to ensure a stable income at a high level even though the cultivated area is not abundant.

Along with that, in the period of 2018-2023, Farmers' Associations at all levels of the city organized 46 agricultural and non-agricultural vocational classes,such as planting and caring for ornamental plants, cooking, preparing drinks, growing mushrooms, growing clean vegetable… with 1,367 turns of members, farmers and farmers' children; linking vocational training with employment and supporting production capital. After completing their studies, more than 80% of the trainees have jobs. Farmers' Associations at all levels also organized 84 transfer training sessions, application of scientific and technical advances, field workshops, visiting models related to cage aquaculture, producing safe vegetable according to VietGAP standards, growing mushrooms, growing fruit trees... for nearly 4,000 members and farmers. In addition, Nha Trang City Farmers' Association regularly facilitates and supports members and farmers to participate in fairs and markets inside and outside the province, coordinate to take agricultural products to the e-commerce trading floor.

According to  Nguyen Van Hoa, in the coming time, the city's People's Committee will continue to focus on mobilizing farmers to change their ways of doing business, to convert suitable varieties, plants and animals with high economic value, to exploit well potentials and resources to develop effective production models, improve living standards and contribute to reducing the poverty rate in the whole city.

For the term of 2023 - 2028, Nha Trang City Farmers' Association strives that 100% of its members are regularly updated with necessary knowledge on skills, information, markets, science, technology - high technology in agricultural production; building 10 effective collective economic models (cooperative groups, cooperatives. Every year, each association aims to build at least 1 to 2 models to help farmers reduce poverty and have stable incomes; strive to have no poor farmer households by the end of 2024.
