Harvesting mangoes in Cam Lam

In Cam Lam district these days, farmers are rushing to harvest mangoes at the end of the season to sell to traders. Although mango prices are not high, the output has been more stable than in the years affected by the Covid-19 epidemic.

This year, the price of Australian mangoes purchased by traders is from 26,000 to 28,000 VND/kg for grade 1 mangoes; grade 2 mangoes are sold from 10,000 to 13,000 VND/kg; grade 3 mangoes under 6,000 VND/kg; and Taiwanese mangoes are cheaper than Australian mangoes by 5,000 - 7,000 VND/kg… At Thu Quang mango barn (in Cam Duc town), workers are busy sorting, wrapping mangoes and packing boxes to deliver to other places; gardeners constantly bring mangoes to wholesale. According to the mango owner, the main markets are still the northern localities and China.

Along National Highway 1, many eye-catching colorful mango stalls are sold by people. "My mangoes have been sold to the barns, I have a few left for retail. It don’e give much profit but this is a typical gift of Cam Lam, so I always leave some mangoes for retail," said Nguyen Thi Mai Thanh (Cam Duc town) said.

According to statistics, the whole Cam Lam district has more than 7,570ha of mangoes, mainly Australian mangoes (about 3,500ha), TU Quy mangoes (about 2,000ha)... According to Dang Chi Liem - Deputy Head of Cam Lam District Division of Agriculture and Rural, this year's mango crop has about 4,800 hectares of fruits (accounting for 63% of the total area). Mango is a local staple crop.

In order to expand the consumption market, stabilize output and improve the value of mangoes, the district has selected and supported businesses, cooperatives and cooperative groups to participate in the one-commune-one-product (OCOP) program. Up to now, there have been 4 subjects with fresh mango products and 1 subject with dried mango products qualified for 3 star OCOP. This is an opportunity for Cam Lam mangoes to promote and expand domestic and export markets.

Liem said that in the coming time, the district will continue to support organizations and individuals to practice good production according to VietGAP standards, support OCOP products in the direction of upgrading to 4-star and 5-star standards; coordinate with the Provincial Sub-Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection to grant planting area codes and packing facility codes to organizations and individuals in order to promote export through official channels. Along with that, the district will support research, development, production and consumption of products processed from mango such as: dried mango, mango juice, mango rice paper... to reduce the pressure of consuming fresh mango in the main season. and add value to Cam Lam mangoes," said Liem.
