Mid-autumn festival will come in nearly one month, but mooncakes have been sold for several weeks. This year, most manufacturers announced to raise the quality and quantity of their products. However, prices only show a slight rise.
Increase in both quality and quantity
Yasaka-Saigon-Nhatrang Hotel decided to increase its production this season to 100,000 mooncakes instead of 80,000 ones which had been sold out two days before last Mid-autumn day. “Yasaka mooncakes are made by famous and experienced cooks. The mooncakes have 25 tastes, mainly traditional and nutritious in weights of 200 grams, 250 grams, 600 grams and 1,000 grams”, said Sales Manager Truc Linh.
Kinh Do, the biggest mooncake producer, have built up 12 standard kiosks of mooncakes in Nha Trang. Kinh Do will launch about 1,600 tonnes of mooncakes into the whole country this year, 10% up over last year’s total quantity but 40% up in high-grade types. The luxury series “Trang vang” is added with Trang vang Hung Phu” and “Trang vang thanh khiet”. Especially, Tuyet and Pha Le, two new kinds of Kinh Do, have contents of sugar, fat and cholesterol 40% lower than usual.
Local producers also said that they will raise quality and quantity of mooncakes for this Mid-autumn festival. Minh Tam, the owner of Hoa Hung Bakery in Nha Trang said, “Hoa Hung Bakery now has produced mooncakes already, but only to orders. We will mass-produce 15 days before the Mid-Autumn day order that our products are always new and no preservatives. Sweet and fat contents will be reduced, saturated fat will be replaced with vegetable oil. Additionally, Hoa Hung Bakery will raise production in fruit mooncakes which sold well last year”.
New brand name - Sanest Mooncake
This year’s mooncake market sees the appearance of a new brand name - Sanest Mooncake, made by Khanh Hoa Salangane Nest Company. Sanest Mooncake products are made by high-grade and nutritious materials, especially salangane nest, shark catilage and holothurian. All of them use isomalt as a partly replacer for sugar. Isomalt is made from pure sugar beet that tastes as naturally sweet as sugar.
Sanest mooncakes are produced at High-class Foodstuff Factory under Khanh Hoa Salangane Nest Company on a modern technology line imported from Taiwan. All their materials are sterilized by high temperature and ultraviolet rays. As a result, they meet the ISO 9001 :2000 international quality standards and HACCP-FSS 1999 food safety standards.
50,000 Sanest mooncakes are planned to enter the market for this first year. They are selling at showrooms of Khanh Hoa Salangane Nest Company.
Slight rise in price
Mooncakes of all kinds this year increase between 5 - 10% in price in comparison with last year.
Most producers said that the increase in price of mooncakes is because of the sharp increase in prices of materials. For example, sugar ups by 40% in price (from VND9,000/kilogram last year to VND14,000/kilogram this year), salted egg ups by 30% (from VND1,700/egg to VND2,500/egg) and melon seed ups by 40% (from VND40,000/kilogram to VND100,000/kilogram). Accordingly, cost price of a mooncake rises between VND1,000 - VND5,000.
Moreover, improving quality must go together with raising price, of course.
