In late-June 2007, Khanh Hoa Province has approved Ngoc Suong Joint Stock Company to invest 254 billion VND on the construction of a resort on Cam Ranh Bay. This is the first project to be granted a certificate since Cam Ranh Bay was transferred from a military base to an economic development zone.
Mr. Tran Ngoc Dung, general manager of Ngoc Suong Company fulfilled his 14-year dream. Ngoc Suong company will offer both restaurant and hotel service in the land where his father worked 50 years ago. “My father opened the first restaurant in 1955 on Cam Ranh Bay, formerly known as the French’s military base. Ngoc Suong is the combination of many mother and elder sister’s names,” Mr. Dung recalled.
He followed his father’s cooking career since the early age. At the age of nine, he could cook some dishes. Some years later, he helped his father in the management of the restaurant. Ngoc Suong restaurant closed down in the war, unfortunately. Mr. Dung then went to France for family reunion in 1977. During the first years, he worked in a bank. However, his passion for cooking and restaurant management turned him back to open three restaurants in France.
Cuisine is a cultural characteristic, thus through Vietnamese food, he wants to introduce Vietnamese culture to foreigners. He said, “The fact that many of his customers like Vietnamese food really pleases him. It is more meaningful than money. Homeland cuisine was seen as both a means of cultural affirmation and a contribution to the enrichment of local customs. Each region has its own culinary tradition that I tried to learn to find out the basic features of Vietnamese food with the intention of a trip back Vietnam.”
From 1983, his trips back Vietnam became more frequent. 2 years later, he helped his father to open Ngoc Suong in Cam Ranh. He decided to sell his restaurants in France to live in Vietnam in 1993. Inheriting the Ngoc Suong trademark with the capital and cuisine experience, he opened the first 300-seat restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City in 1993 and quickly gains success. 2 years later, his business thrives quickly.
Since 2002, he has expanded his business scope to interior decoration to serve restaurants, hotels, resorts...The project of a 58 ha resort on Cam Ranh Bay is expected to finish by 2010. The project is carried out in cooperation between Ngoc Suong and Incombank. There are 12 Ngoc Suong restaurants nationwide so far with 700 employees. He said all his brothers and sisters are good at cooking, but what makes him successful is his venturesomeness.
He plans to introduce his Vietnamese food under the trademark Delissaigon in foreign countries, France, Japan and Singapore. The food will be creatively processed and beautifully displayed. I like to form my own distinctive character, which can feature Vietnamese food quintessence...Delissaigon trademark was first developed in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi in September 2007.
