Although the number of engineering units in Khanh Hoa is inconsiderable, in addition to large State - run units, private establishments also operate effectively. However, they are not invested appropriately. Large companies such as Khanh Viet Cooperation, Khanh Hoa Sugar Company, etc… operate in mechanical field only in order to meet their own demand. The number of products to serve customers’ demand is limited. Typically, Khatoco Mechanical Enterprise specializes in manufacturing a lot of machinery, equipment but the majority of them is served in textile paper and tobacco industry. The Workshop of Khanh Hoa Sugar Company specializes in manufacturing equipment for sugar production. However, Vina Nha Trang Mechanical Joint – Stock Company has stood firm in the market by manufacturing coffee processing machines, farm product processing machines (bean, pepper). Its products not only meet the domestic demand (taking up 85% of the domestic market share) but also are exported to international markets. The Chief of the personnel department of Vina Nha Trang Mechanical Joint – Stock Company, Cao Duy Vinh said: “in term of mechanical engineering, the company has set up a trademark, so it can stand firm in the market. Besides, due to the fact that Vietnam has a large number of coffee exported to foreign countries, many corporations have learned about and known more about its products. Since put into operation, Tan Phat workshop (at 27 Sing Trung, Nha Trang) has attached special importance to setting up its trademark, improving the competition capacity so that its products such as scouring machines and water filtering machines serving for aquaculture gain much prestige in the market. In 2003, it had 40 scouring machines exported to Korea, opening prospect for exporting its aquaculture serving products to industrialized countries.
As can be seen, Khanh Hoa has much potential for engineering branch. However, this branch has not been developed yet because of the lack of orientation. Its products are not popular among customers. The majority of machines and equipment manufactured in the locality attract less interest from customers. Customers tend to buy products with well – known brands. For example, the price for scouring machines that are exported to Korea is lower than the price for those manufactured in HCM City. However, not many customers consumed the local products. About 40% of its products is consumed in the locality.
However, some units that stand firm in the market such as Vina Nha Trang Engineering Joint - Stock Company and Tan Phat may create momentum for the local engineering development. It is high time functional agencies issued preferential policies to boost the development of this branch.
