| Moongthong durian fruits, the promise of an abundant harvest in Khanh Son district. |
Khanh Son durian will be in harvest in two weeks. At present, Moothong gardens of closely-fruited durian trees are being taken good care for the production of high quality fruit. Farmers are expecting an abundant durian harvest.
The type of soil and climate in Khanh Son have created the particular durian breed, Khanh Son durian variety.
The particular breed of durian makes Khanh Son a region with distinctive personality in terms of durian growing. Arriving at commune 5, To Hap town, we met Mr. Dang Tai Ho - one of farmers who have large durian farms. His durian farm has about 600 durian trees, Of which, there are 70 trees in the third harvest. Mr. Ho said: “this year, durian trees bear rich fruits and we have to cut poor quality fruits so that other fruits can develop better. As a result, Khanh Son durian trees often bear big fruits. As known, Mr. Ho’s durian garden has numerous trees that bear as many as 1,000 fruits. However, he usually keeps between 30 and 35 fruits hanging onto for each tree”. As estimated, he can harvest 3 tons of durian this year. According to the current price, he has a profit of almost VND50 million.
In the durian harvest season 2005, durians were sold at a spot price of 15,000VND/kg. With the good durian quality and the present situation of the durian market, farmers in Khanh Son hope the durian price may reach 20,000 VND/kg in this durian season. An average durian tree yields about 100kg of fruits every year.
Owing to the good soil and the favourable natural conditions, annually, there are durian trees that bear fruits of 8 – 12kg. Mr. Ho who has experience in growing durian made known: “durian trees in this region grow rapidly. A durian tree bears fruit only after 4 years of planting. And it only takes 4 months to fructify. Thus, most farmers pay attention to developing durian gardens into Khanh Son’s special fruit gardens. All the durian trees that are bearing fruits belong to the price support project and the forest-planting project 743. At present, Khanh Son Province has 2,500 durian trees of this project.
In general, Moongthong durian variety has contributed to the structure of cultivated crops in this mountainous district. A number of households in Khanh Son have poured much money on expanding area of durian trees and have become typical durian farm models. Such typical farms are in Ba Cum Bac, Son Binh, Son Lam and To Hap town...
Moongthong durian variety grown in Khanh Son usually bears fruits about 2 months later than other varieties in other regions. What is special about this durian variety is yellow – meat, small - core, so, they are sought after by a number of people. As a result, Khanh Son durian is always sold at a higher price than other durian varieties. This is also an advantage for Khanh Son District to expand the area of durian in the years coming.
