According to many international geographers, the best 3 natural seaports are San Fancisco (the USA), Rio de Janero (Brazil) and Cam Ranh (Vietnam).
We can say that Cam Ranh Bay, over 60km2, is a valuable resource offered by nature. According to declared documents, the largest zone of the Cam Ranh Bay is about 6km wide spreading about 12km onto the mainland, open to the sea through an about-3km-wide estuary. Most of the bay is 12-32km deep, so over 30 000 ton ships can go into the bay at any time. The advantage is that the bay is just one hour from the international sea lane by ship (18 hours from Hai Phong Port). The tide comes out and in regularly at the fixed time. The marine characteristics are very meaningful to the economy and marine technology. In terms of marine geography, the bottom of the bay is quite flat, made up of a kind of mud-mixed sand, convenient for dropping anchors. Well-protected by the peninsular from the wind, Cam Ranh Bay becomes a good shelter for ships and boats. Outside the bay are some islets and high hills convenient for building marine lights and radars.
Cam Ranh Peninsular is approximately 12km long with over 10 000ha of forest, a big fresh-water lake and several picturesque beaches. With the charming sight, Cam Ranh Peninsular is considered to be a place of great tourism potentials. In the bay, the runway, 3,045m long and 45m wide, can accommodate 10 planes of vast size at the same time. The system of roads, warehouses and technical infrastructures are very suitable for building a special economic zone.
The event “waking up” Cam Ranh Airport has a great influence on the socio-economic development in Khanh Hoa Province and the surrounding provinces of Ninh Thuan, Phu Yen, Dak Lak,.. Pham Van Chi, Chairman of Khanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee of the term 1999-2004 said, under the provincial guidelines, on the northern part of Cam Ranh Peninsular would develop high-quality resorts. Along the newly-built Cu Hin Pass leading to Cam Ranh Bay, the land is divided into plots for domestic bussinesses’ investment. Along the beach will rise a lot of high buildings, together with 4-star resorts and 2 parks to offer tourists service in entertainment and sea-bathing. The People’s Committee of Khanh Hoa Province has just approved the project of building a high-quality villa block in the northern access to Cam Ranh Peninsular. This block is located in the western of Bai Dai Resort with an area of 120,2ha and a capacity of 3,600 persons. The construction land is 500m2-1000m2; 1.9-2.1 floors in the average height with parks, sport centers, trading centers, tree-covered areas. The defined density construction is 10-15%. Besides, along Thuy Trieu Swamp are Cam Hai Dong Residential and Resettlement Areas with an area of 162.3ha, the east of which faces a highspeed highway with a 60m landmark.
