The efforts and practical approaches to revive the reading culture in communities in Khanh Hoa in recent five years have resulted in some positive outcomes.

In order to build up the reading movement in schools, the local departments of education and training across the province launched thematic reading days at schools in many different forms such as book fair, book donation, contest on learning about books, book storytelling contest, book-themed play-acting and drawing contests, book introduction, and friendly school library. These activities helped to arouse students’ interest in reading. Since being formed in the 2017-2018 school year, the “green library corner” of Tran Quang Khai Junior High School (Dien Khanh District) has become a favorite place of many students in break time. To Hap Primary School (Khanh Son District) started the movement namely “One good book for each week”; Khanh Dong Primary School (Khanh Vinh District) equipped bookcases with the books provided by the parents.

In response to the Vietnam Book Day, Khanh Hoa Provincial Department of Information and Communications, Department of Health, and Department of Labor, War Invalids & Social Affairs, etc. often present books to the organizations in the province; hold book-themed talks; launch reading movement in schools; and form book clubs.

Khanh Hoa Newspaper also set up its own program to promote reading in schools, namely “My class’s bookcase”.  Since 2015, the program of Khanh Hoa Newspaper, which has been supported by its employees and many sponsors, has provided 44 bookcases with thousands of books to five schools in the districts of Cam Lam, Khanh Vinh and Van Ninh and Ninh Hoa Town. With the bookcases set up at schools and classes, Khanh Hoa Newspaper hopes to help the students to access books more easily; form reading habit and instill a love of reading in students right from primary schools.

Besides the positive results, many activities responding to the Vietnam Book Day still need to be improved. For example, these activities were carried out a small scale and spontaneously; the reading movement has not spread equally, especially in the remote and mountainous areas; the facilities, books, and materials of the public libraries are not adequate.

“Our activities responding to the Vietnam Book Day have focused on the youth, especially pupils and students. However, some schools and universities have paid much attention to professional tasks instead of libraries’ activities,” said Phan Thi Kim Hanh, Deputy Director of Khanh Hoa Provincial Library. The conference summarizing the results of five years complementing the Vietnam Book Day in Khanh Hoa also discussed about the shortcomings in propagandizing and implementing activities to promote the reading culture.

As stated by Nguyen Dac Tai, Vice-Chairman of Khanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee, the activities responding to the Vietnam Book Day were necessary for changing reading habit of the communities. Tai said that the provincial and local units needed to examine the shortcomings, surmount the difficulties and organize activities appropriately with the actual circumstances of each unit and locality.  The youth unions need to play an active role in carrying out practical activities. It is also essential to call for public contributions to spread reading culture.
