Through 12 years, the annual contest on cultural heritages of Khanh Hoa has become a useful event for the pupils in the province to learn about the tangible and intangible cultural heritages. The activities of the contest have been expected to foster the pupils’ interest in the heritages.

The 2018 edition of the provincial contest on cultural heritages was held recently by Khanh Hoa Provincial Department of Culture and Sports. Taking part in the contest were the most outstanding teams from the district-level contests.  With good preparation, the teams showed their knowledge of the scenic spots, monuments and cultural heritages of the province, country and also the world. Many performances were elaborately staged with beautiful costumes and well-prepared scripts. The plays and knowledge the contestants performed at this contest shows that the contestants spent much time in learning and preparing for their items.

In the introduction section, the teams introduced the typical characteristics of the local cultural heritages, their schools and team’s members. Bui Thi Xuan Junior High School (Nha Trang) impressed the audience with their in-depth information, good performance and costumes. The second and third sections were learning about world cultural heritages in Vietnam, national cultural heritages in Khanh Hoa, general knowledge of Khanh Hoa’s history and culture, law on cultural heritages; and identifying world cultural heritages in Vietnam and national cultural heritages in Khanh Hoa through photos. The small score difference between teams partly reflected the quite good preparation of the participants.

The strong points of each team were clearly embodied in the talent section. Nha Trang contestants perform their talent with Bài Chòi (Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity recognized by UNESCO); the team from the mountainous area Khanh Son performed lithophone, a special music instrument of the people in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. The bond of brotherhood was expressed emotionally by Cam Ranh’s contestants; Van Ninh team performed a short play about Vietnamese national martyr and heroine Vo Thi Sau; another team from a mountainous area in Khanh Hoa, Khanh Vinh, staged a play about rain praying rite of Ê Đê people. Especially, the outstanding performance about practices related to the Viet beliefs in the Mother Goddesses of Three Realms of Dien Khanh team left a good impression on the jury and audience. Dien Khanh’s performance was also awarded the first prize in talent section.

Le Ngoc My Trinh, member of Bui Thi Xuan Junior High School said that her team’s members put in much time to search for information and knowledge on newspapers and on the internet as well as to rehearse the performances. The preparation for the contest provided them much useful knowledge of the cultural heritages and helped them to acknowledge their responsibility for conserving these heritages.

The contest on cultural heritages is really useful to raise the awareness and foster the interest and pride of national and provincial cultural heritages of the young generation.
