Cultural characteristics featured at festival for youths of ethnic communities

The first festival for the youths of ethnic communities of Khanh Hoa was recently organized at Khanh Son Ethnic Group Boarding High School (Khanh Son District). It was an interesting activity featuring many cultural characteristics of the ethnic communities over the province.

The Nha Trang youths’ camp was decorated with the typical materials of the fishers in Nha Trang, such as pieces of net and paddles. Nha Trang youths brought different types of food and products produced by Nha Trang young people to the festival, including fish source, dried squid, dried fish, coconuts, and blinds made of shells, etc.
 
In another section, the young people of Khanh Son District displayed the unique items of this mountainous area which were lithophone, monochord, mã la (traditional musical instrument of Raglai ethnic minority), crossbow, arrow, and so on. Besides, some special fruits of Khanh Son District like small-seed durian and rambutan were also brought to the festival. “This is the first time the festival for the youths of Khanh Hoa’s ethnic communities has been organized. Therefore, I want to introduce our unique cultural features to other ethnic communities. This is also a way to express our proud in our culture and tradition,” said Bo Bo Thi Minh Thu, member of Vietnam Youth Federation in Khanh Son District.

 

 
During the festival, more than 250 youths of different localities took part in collective activities, such as playing folk games (tug of war, rod pushing, crossbow shooting, “ném còn” (throwing a sacred ball through the ring)), preparing and cooking typical dishes. For example, Nha Trang youth cooked Vietnamese rice pancake, grilled chopped fish, “bánh canh” (Vietnamese rice noodle soup); Van Ninh young people prepared seafood like raw oyster eaten with wasabi, grilled fish. Especially, Khanh Ninh group prepared many unique dishes of the mountainous area such as wheat leaves fried with pork meat, soup of papaya flower, pumpkin shoots, red amaranth, etc., papaya flower fried with garlic. 

 

 
As reported by Nguyen Khac Duy, member of Khanh Hoa Provincial Youth Federation of Vietnam and Deputy Director of Khanh Hoa Supporting Center for Youths, the festival’s organization committee commended 18 youths who performed well the work of the federation and youths’ movement.
 
The festival is planned to be organized every two years.
