The National Athletics Championships 2021 took place at My Dinh Stadium, Hanoi, joined by more than 380 athletes of 42 teams over the country. Due to the complicated situation of COVID-19, some localities had to withdraw from the tournament; some key athletes of the national teams couldn’t compete in their forte. This partly affected the quality of the tournament. Reportedly, the national team members still took first places in the events they competed in. Many young players proved their strength and gradually asserted their positions in the domestic playground.

The outbreak of COVID-19 has caused many difficulties for Khanh Hoa’s athletics team as well as other teams in the country in training and practicing for the tournament. Khanh Hoa athletes primarily took part in their forte such as men’s 400m, men’s 4x400m and 4x200m relays. This year’s tournament saw more intense competitions between teams and athletes because the tournament was an importance stepping stone for the national team athletes to prepare for the 31st SEA Games.

The hope for gold medal of Khanh Hoa at the 2021 National Athletics Championships was pinned on Tran Nhat Hoang, who achieved three gold medals in SEA Games 30 in Philippines. In matchday 3, Hoang overcame the strong athletes of Ha Tinh Province and Thanh Hoa Province to finish first in men’s 400m at 46.96. At the 2020 National Athletics Championships, Hoang also won gold medal in this event after overcoming two veteran athletes of Ha Tinh and Thanh Hoa.

Besides his individual gold medal, Hoang contributed to Khanh Hoa’s silver medal and bronze medal in men’s 4x400m and 4x200m relays respectively. This result marked a progress of Khanh Hoa’s athletics compared to their result in 2020 (one gold and one bronze).

Three national records were set at the 2021 National Athletics Championships. Specifically, Nguyen Thi Oanh of Bac Giang Province finished first at 15:53.48 in women’s 5,000m, breaking the national record made by Khanh Hoa’s Doan Nu Truc Van in 2003 (16:12.73). The two other records were set by Da Nang athlete in men’s 20,000m race-walk (1:33:22.06) and Binh Dinh athlete in women’s 10,000m race-walk (34:1.59).
