Vietnam lost their top place in Group G of the Asian Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 after losing 2-3 to the UAE in their final match of the second qualifiers on June 15.

Vietnam only needed a draw with the UAE to maintain their Group lead. Coach Park Hang-seo made only one change from the 2-1 victory over Malaysia, Nguyen Quang Hai in replace for Nguyen Cong Phuong.

In the first half, Vietnam mainly focused on defense. The UAE created a lot of attacks to the goal of Vietnamese keeper Tan Truong. In the 32nd minute, Ali Salmeen received a long cross from Abdallah Ramadan and beat goalkeeper Tan Truong to put the ball in the net.

In the second half, Nguyen Cong Phuong and Pham Duc Huy were put into a game from the bench. Vietnam conceded the third goal in the 50 minute.

The match ended 3-2 for the UAE. Vietnam still secured a spot in the final round of the Asian World Cup qualifiers as one of the best second-placed teams.
