The establishment of Nha Trang Shark-NTU basketball club and their ambition to join strong teams at the national basketball championship are bringing a new wind to Khanh Hoa Province’s basketball movement.
More than 10 years ago, Khanh Hoa’s basketball movement began to develop with the appearance of many teams of clubs, unions and groups. However, most of these teams were formed and operated spontaneously and did not have clear goals and directions. In 2018, Khanh Hoa’s sports sector organized a movement basketball tournament for clubs; it attracted more than ten male and female clubs of the businesses and localities in the province. This tournament created a motivation for the people with passion for basketball to come up with the idea of establishing a club and gradually developing that club towards a professional direction. Nha Trang Shark-NTU, based at Nha Trang University, is the pioneer club of that idea.

According to PhD Tran Doan Hung, vice-principal of Nha Trang University, in recent years, the movements of physical and sports practice among Nha Trang University students have developed strongly, including basketball movement. However, this movement wasn’t commensurate with the facilities, and the enthusiastic lecturers, coaches, and players of the university. With a wish to form and build a club to promote the university’s basketball movement in particular and Khanh Hoa’s basketball movement in general, the university established its Nha Trang Shark-NTU basketball club in December 2019.
Initially, the club's goal was building a basketball movement among the students and creating a playground for the students who love this sport. However, after six months from establishment, Nha Trang Shark-NTU could organize a movement basketball open tournament; they also recruited new members with good quality. Not only that, they participated in the national championship and left good impressions.
At first, Nha Trang Shark-NTU only included around 20 members who were mainly the lecturers and former students of Nha Trang University. The number of members now increases to 35, many among them used to play for strong movement basketball teams in Khanh Hoa and clubs in Ho Chi Minh City. The team also joined the 2020 National Basketball Championship taking place in April 2021. In the first time competing with strong basketball teams from over the country, although Nha Trang Shark-NTU could get high achievement, they finished the tournament leaving positive impressions thanks to their good competing spirit. This is expected to motivate them to keep developing.
According to the recent assessment of Vietnam Basketball Federation, based on the statistics, Khanh Hoa’s basketball has shown positive development, helping them to appear on the country’s movement basketball map. For example Khanh Hoa now has fewer than five basketball courts; has its own tournament at provincial level; and have teams participating in the national championship.
Nguyen Tuan Thanh, deputy director of Khanh Hoa Provincial Department of Culture and Sports said, "So far, Khanh Hoa’s movement basketball has mostly developed spontaneously. The establishment and direction of Nha Trang Shark-NTU basketball club has proved an effective step, contributing to the general development of basketball movement of the province.
