- The Ministry of Education and Training moved the 10th national Phu Dong Sports Festival from 2020 to 2021 and changed its program due to the impacts of COVID-19 outbreak. Under the instructions of the ministry, Khanh Hoa Province’s Steering Committee of Phu Dong Sports Festival has discussed and decided the program and regulations of the province-level festival. Accordingly, Khanh Hoa’s Phu Dong Sports Festival of the school-year 2020-2021 includes 11 sports: athletics, swimming, physical exercises, chess, badminton, shuttlecock kicking, stick pushing, table tennis, football, volleyball, and basketball, five sports fewer than the nation-level festival. Primary school students will play eight sports; junior high school students play all 11 sports; high school students play ten sports. The province-level festival has 171 events, 215 fewer than the nation-level one. 2,351 students of eight local bureaus of education and training, 31 schools and the provincial Sports Technique Training Center will take part in the province’s Phu Dong Sports Festival, school-year 2020-2021.

The provincial Department of Education and Training has cooperated with Nha Trang University and related units to make the program for the province’s 2021 Phu Dong Sports Festival. Specifically, the festival kicks off at 8am on April 7 and ends on April 15. The opening ceremony will feature the performances of Khanh Hoa’s Vovinam masters and practitioners. 400 officials, teachers, and students involve in organization process. The security, health and fire safety will also be ensured.

- The province-level Phu Dong sports festival has fewer sports and competition events than the nation-level and region-level ones. What is the plan that the province’s education and training sector has prepared to ensure enough players for the nation-level and region-level festivals?

- The province-level festival doesn’t have tug of war, Vovinam, traditional martial arts, karate, and taekwondo events. The provincial Department of Culture and Sports has directed the sports federations and associations to hold tryouts to select Vovinam, traditional martial arts, karate, and taekwondo players. After that, this department cooperates with the provincial Department of Culture and Sports to form the provincial martial arts teams to prepare for the nation-level festival. Meanwhile, some players of other sports are picked to form the provincial tug of war team.

- The provincial 2021 Phu Dong Sports Festival takes place for nearly 10 days with many sports and participants. So how will COVID-19 prevention and control measures be implemented?

- The provincial People's Committee has directed the provincial Department of Health to implement the pandemic prevention and control measures throughout the festival. Accordingly, the department will ensure food safety and good hygiene; give injured athletes first aid; set up a hotline and provide contact numbers when needed, etc. In order to ensure the safety of all participants, all teams are requested to make health declaration, use hand sanitizer, and wear masks. The participating students have health checks before taking part in the festival.
