School athletics movement in Nha Trang reflected through tryout for Phu Dong Sports Festival

Nha Trang City reduced the scale and number of sports played at the city's 2021 Phu Dong Sports Festival, a sport festival for school students held every four years, due to COVID-19.

Nha Trang City reduced the scale and number of sports played at the city’s 2021 Phu Dong Sports Festival, a sport festival for school students held every four years, due to COVID-19. Hence, the city only held the tryout of some sports namely athletics, stick pushing, shuttlecock kicking, and football. As for athletics, through the quality of players showed in the tryout, it could be seen that the schools made a quite good investment in this sport.

The outbreak of COVID-19 forced the 10th national-level and province-level Phu Dong sport festivals originally planned to take place in the 2019-2020 school year to be postponed. This year, the Ministry of Education and Training has planned to organize the region-level Phu Dong sport festivals in April and May and the nation-level festival in Nam Dinh Province in August. This means that the provinces and cities over the country need to hold their province- and city-level Phu Dong sports festivals within March and April. All the festivals must be held in compliance with the pandemic control and prevention measures.

In order to prepare for the provincial Phu Dong Sports Festival scheduled for the end of March, Nha Trang City Bureau of Education and Training organized a tryout to select players for the city’s sports teams which didn’t have enough players, including athletics, stick pushing, shuttlecock kicking, and football. Around 360 school students took part in the tryout, including 11 events for primary school students and eight events for junior high school students. The players of the other sports teams have been trained at sports training centers.

Nha Trang’s tryout took place from March 2 to 7 at the provincial Sports Technique Training Center (Nguyen Khuyen Street) and Nha Trang Sports Training and Competition Center. More than 1,000 players from 41 primary schools and 26 junior high schools in the city took part in the tryout. Athletics had the most number of players with 570 male and female primary and junior high school students competing in the events of 60m, 100m, 200m, long jump, and high jump. 128 primary and junior high school students took part in shuttlecock kicking; 312 junior high school joined stick pushing event; and 32 primary school students played in football event. The quality of athletics players as well as school athletics movement reflected through the competitions was highly appreciated by the specialists.

The participating schools had prepared carefully for the athletics tryout; therefore, the events of this sport were highly competitively, according to Hoang Thi Huyen Nga, a deputy of Khanh Hoa Provincial Sports Technque Training Center, head of the tryout. Bach Dang Junior High School (Tri Nguyen Island, Vinh Nguyen Ward) got an outstanding result in this tryout; its students won medals in most of the events. This showed that the school has paid attention in promoting athletics movement among its students.

Reportedly, Bach Dang Junior High School fielded players in three sports but had focused more on athletics. The school’s investment in athletics proved effectiveness. Five out of six Bach Dang Junior High School students competing in athletics won four gold medals, two silvers, and one bronze. That was a fruitful result of the school’s teachers and students, especially when the school is located on an island and is not equipped with relatively good facilities like the schools on mainland. Besides, because of the school’s location, it was also relatively difficult to arrange training time for the students. The encouraging achievement of Bach Dang Junior High School at the tryout will be a driving force for the school to keep improving the quality of its physical teaching in general and athletics in particular.
