Nha Trang City recently organized its 25th unicorn-lion-dragon dance contest to welcome Lunar New Year (Tet) 2021. The graceful and skillful performances of the contestants showed their careful preparation in preserving and promoting the traditional beauty of the country on Tet days.

Over 25 years, the unicorn-lion-dragon dance contest has become a traditional activity of the city and a favorite culture-sport activity of many people in Nha Trang on Tet occasion. Thanks to this contest, the unicorn-lion-dragon clubs in the city have an opportunity to compete with each other and show their skills to the public. This has contributed to promote the development of this artistic sport.

This year’s contest took place from January 25 to February 1 with the participation of 32 teams from clubs, communes and wards over the city. The participating teams performed 49 performances of unicorn-lion-dragon dance. As said by a jury member, this year, besides focusing on moves and technique, the teams paid more attention to their content, stage arrangement, and props. These things helped the dances to be more entertaining.

The highlight of this year’s contest was the competition namely Mai Hoa Thung, in which the teams needed to perform the dances on high pillars. To be able to perform Mai Hoa Thung, the contestants, who are martial art practitioners, need to practice hard for a long time and master a certain level of martial art. Only a few teams register for this competition. This year, four teams of Vinh Truong Ward, Vinh Phuoc-Tan Lap coalition, Nam Phong Dong Club, and Phuoc Long-Phuoc Hoa coalition took part in Mai Hoa Thung competition. The careful preparation, hard practice of the teams as well as the confidence and bravery of the contestants were shown through their elaborate performances. Finally, two 15-year-old contestants of Phuoc Long-Phuoc Hoa coalition with their marvelous performance impressed the jury and were awarded the highest prize of Mai Hoa Thung competition. More impressively, that was the first time these two young contestants had taken part in the city’s unicorn-lion-dragon dance contest.

The attractive performances of unicorn-lion-dragon dance and the powerful and resounding drumbeats contributed to create a festive atmosphere in the beach city of Nha Trang on the days leading to Tet 2021.
