PV GAS National Volleyball Championship 2021, the first volleyball tournament of Vietnam in 2021, is due to kick off in early March.  This year’s championship with some changes in the ranking method promises highly competitive competitions among teams.

PV Gas National Volleyball Championship 2021 still has the same number of participating teams and relegated teams, scoring rules, etc. as the previous championships. However, this year, the organization committee has made some changes to the ranking method and the way to decide the last four teams for the final round. As usual, in the first round, the teams are still divided into groups A and B. After this round, the first, third and fifth-placed teams of Group A will join the second and fourth-placed teams of Group B in Group C in the second round. Meanwhile, the remaining teams will form Group D. Previously, only the results in the second round were taken into account to determine the four finalists, who are the first and second-placed teams of Group C and Group D. However, this year, the rankings will be decided based on the results of the teams in both rounds. The ranking criteria include the number of winning matches, the fractions of winning sets to losing sets and of successful serves to failed serves, and even the positions of teams last year.

According to this ranking method, after two rounds, all ten teams can have opportunities to qualify for the final round instead of five teams like the previous tournaments. The team with the most number of winning matches after two rounds will place first. The top four teams will enter the final round. The fifth and six-placed teams will reserve their positions in the next season. The teams from seventh to tenth positions will have to compete to avoid relegation. This ranking method has been said to be complicated by some people but well received by many experts.

The new ranking method requires the teams who aim for the first place need to try their best with high determination to grab the most number of wins, as said by Tran Quang Thuong - Director of Khanh Hoa Provincial Sports Technique Training Center. There is another opinion about the new method that to have advantages in the final round, which is played in a cross-match format, teams will have to play hard from the first round. The team that wants to place first to meet the fourth-placed team in the finals will have to win not only many matches but also many set points.
