Mai Duc Chung’s side played with more halfbacks than the 1-1 draw with Thailand in the group stage. This change resulted in some better connections between the halfbacks and forwards. However, Vietnam could not convert their chances into goals in the first half.

Thailand pushed high up in the second half. They had a goal in the early minutes of the half, but it was ruled out for offside. Vietnam also produced many counter-attacks. Their chance came in the 72nd minute when Huynh Nhu made a header, but it went wide of the far post.
