Khanh Hoa Association for Conservation of Nature & Environment in partnership with A.Yersin Investment and Technology Joint Stock Company is taking steps to digitize forest biodiversity database, contributing to biodiversity security and preservation in Khanh Hoa Province.

Creating biodiversity database

QR code has been used in the preservation of a Teak tree at Linh Son Phap An Pagoda in Suoi Cat, Cam Lam District. A.Yersin Investment and Technology Joint Stock Company has supported the pagoda to create a QR code for the heritage Teak tree, allowing convenient access to its data online.

According to the leader of Khanh Hoa Association for Conservation of Nature & Environment, Khanh Hoa Province has high biodiversity. The forest biodiversity database has been created, serving digital transformation in forest resources.

Khanh Hoa has recorded 2,367 species of flora, including 91 endangered, rare or of high economic values such as Aquilaria crassna, Dalbergia oliveri and Afzelia xylocarpa. Khanh Hoa is rich in orchid resources with 210 species, including Dendrobium khanhoaense and Christensonia vietnamica, which are endemic to Vietnam and especially world-famous Paphiopedilum delenatii.

781 species of fauna found Khanh Hoa include 63 endangered classified in the Vietnam Red Book and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Many are in urgent need of preservation such as Yellow-cheeked gibbon, Pygathrix nigripes, Capricornis sumatraensis and Elongated tortoises. Many rare species of flora and fauna are at risk of extinction. Some of high medicinal values are being overexploited such as Anoectochilus setaceus and Paramignya trimera.

In addition, the degradation of forest biodiversity causes ecological imbalance, adversely affecting the living environment and sustainable development. Therefore, it is essential to have an effective tool to manage forest biodiversity, contributing to promoting and raising awareness of biodiversity conservation.

Taking steps toward digital transformation

The biodiversity database of 653 species of flora and 524 species of fauna has been made into 2 sets: the original BRAHMS with sufficient data and information managed by the authority and the other for dissemination, management, research and education. Khanh Hoa Association for Conservation of Nature & Environment in partnership with A.Yersin Investment and Technology Joint Stock Company is step by step digitizing biodiversity database of forests in Khanh Hoa.

According to Lu The Hung, a CEO member of A.Yersin Investment and Technology Joint Stock Company, technologies applied in the digital transformation of forest resources include Blockchain (Block) and NFT (non-fungible token). Blockchain can provide a secure way to manage data and privacy and thus prevent the risk of data breaches. The app is currently used for the reference to product tracking under the program on cultivating bio-agarwood on Aquilaria crassna plants in Khanh Hoa.

Aquilaria crassna plants are labels with QR codes create customers’ trust. The Association for Conservation of Nature & Environment has also labeled Vietnam heritage trees in the province with QR codes; and increase public awareness of biodiversity values and intellectual property preservation.

Rare genetic resources are integrated with data in line with the conservation and sustainable exploitation program. A NFT is a record on a blockchain associated with a particular digital or physical asset such as paintings or photos of some typical animals or plants, especially the endangered. The ownership of an NFT is recorded in the blockchain and NFTs provide a public certificate of authenticity or proof of the ownership.

The digital data of extinct animals and plants help raise public awareness of preservation of rare endangered species in Khanh Hoa. Examples include the collection of images of rare animals such as Rhinos which used to be founded in Cam Lam, tigers in Phuoc Dong, elephants in Ninh Hoa and bears at Ca Pass. Forest plants include Calocedrus macrolepis, Pinus krempfii, Aquilaria crassna, Karomia fragrans Dop, Paphiopedilum delenatii, Dendrobium khanhoaense, Vani Yersin and so on.

The association has suggested improvement in infrastructures and facilities related to application of advanced technologies in forest resource digitization and the establishment of a nature and biodiversity exhibition center in the province.
