The blood donation campaign has widely and sustainably expanded in Khanh Hoa Province, contributing to ensuring sufficient blood demand for life-saving emergencies and treatment. Khanh Hoa Province has made remarkable contribution to the expansion of blood donation campaign nationwide.

Widely expanding

In response to the National Blood Donation Day (April 7), in early April, over 400 military staff, officials, soldiers, Youth Union members and young people in the province joined the blood donation day held by the Provincial Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation in partnership with Khanh Hoa Public Security, donating as many as 300 units of blood.

“I have donated blood three times. I will continue my donation as this is a very meaningful act, showing the spirit of solidarity of Vietnamese people," said Lieutenant Nguyen Viet Bao, Provincial Public Security.

The Provincial Public Security staff have participated in the campaign, promoting the youth's enthusiasm of young people. Especially, the campaign has received direction of the Party Committee and the Directorate of the Provincial Public Security, so the number of blood donors has kept increasing year by year. That is the premise for the expansion of the blood donation campaign.”

Since 2017, officials, soldiers, Youth Union and young people of the provincial Public Security have joined several blood donation drives, giving over 2,000 units of blood. Especially in 2021, in response to General Secretary and State President Nguyen Phu Trong's call for the “National Voluntary Blood Donation Day”, provincial Public Security staff joined blood donation, helping to resolve shortages in blood supply for medical treatment during the Covid-19 outbreak.

The blood donation campaign has received response and support from local agencies, organizations and the community such as the Navy Academy, Communications Officer Training School, Air Force Officer Training School, Provincial Youth Union, Trade Union, Ninh Hoa Town, Cam Ranh City, etc.

Encouraging achievements

According to the National Hematology and Blood Transfusion Institute, the benefits of donating blood include reducing harmful iron stores, lower your risk of a stroke or heart attack. Giving blood can reveal potential health problems and be another way to have doctors keep an eye on cardiovascular health for free of charge. Particularly the blood donation certificates will help donors to receive blood for treatment at public healthcare facilities nation. The total amount of blood donor may receive may be the same of which they have donated.

Luu Thi Bich Huong, Khanh Hoa Red Cross Vice-Chairperson, Chief of the Office of Khanh Hoa Provincial Steering Board for Blood Donation, the Blood Donation has been expanding widely in a sustainable way, contributing to resolving the scarcity of blood, especially during the special periods such as the Lunar New Year, summer, rainy seasons and amid the Covid-19 outbreak.

The blood donation rate among residents has reached 1.53%; and repeaters reached 63%. 100% of donated blood has been used for treatment. Particularly, in 2021, in spite of severe impacts from Covid-19 together with social distancing measures under the Prime Minister Directives No. 15 and 16 for more than 3 months, 61 blood donation drives were organized, drawing the participation of over 22,000 donors, collecting nearly 20,000 units of blood for medical treatment and emergencies in the province.

In spite of achievements, some challenges in the blood donation campaign at district and commune levels include the lack of funding for the promotion of propaganda and development of blood donors for maintaining blood banks, etc.

In order to ensure sustainability of blood donation, the Provincial Steering Board for Blood Donation will continue promoting sources of blood donors, boosting propaganda and application of information technology in the blood donation campaign.
