Assistance for the vulnerable

The family of Nguyen Thi Thuy Diem, Lac Binh Village, Ninh Tho Commune, Ninh Hoa Town is suffering from financial distress as her husband is severely ill, unable to take care of himself; and their both daughters are with congenital deformities. They are depending on a monthly allowance. She has tried rattan weaving to earn some more money for her family. The Provincial Nursing and Care Center for Policy Beneficiaries and Social Work has provided her family VND6.4 million to buy a cow breeder. “I’m so happy to receive the financial aid which helps inspire me to greater efforts to overcome difficulties in life,” she said.

Her husband is a salt worker with instable income. They have 3 school-aged children to take care of. The Provincial Nursing and Care Center for Policy Beneficiaries and Social Work has provided her family VND5 million for raising chicken together with one-time nutrition support for her tuberculosis treatment and got her connected with doctors for drug-resistant tuberculosis treatment and care counseling.

The Provincial Nursing and Care Center for Policy Beneficiaries and Social Work has focused on implementing support activities to help the vulnerable and disadvantaged. In particular, through the Holt International Children's Services Project, the unit has collected information and assessed needs of the vulnerable and made a management record of nearly 300 single mothers and children in need of assistance and infected with Covid-19.

Through the project on social support for tuberculosis patients, the center has received counseling, livelihood support, nutrition and health insurance cards offered to 100 households with members suffering from tuberculosis. In addition, the center has mobilized donation to the Child Protection Fund (more than VND458 million raised in 2021 alone); given surgery support for maxillofacial malformations, congenital heart defects for children, etc. In addition, every year, the center also cooperates with localities to grant scholarships, New Year gifts, and relief aid to children in difficult circumstances in the province.

Continuing mobilizing resources for assistance

There are more vulnerable people, especially children, in need of assistance while the current social work meets some challenges due to lack of funding, staffing shortage, etc. According to Tran Thi Ngoc Thuy, Director of the Provincial Nursing and Care Center for Policy Beneficiaries and Social Work, the unit will make more efforts in promoting support activities to help the vulnerable and disadvantaged people to overcome life challenges, focusing on opening life skills training classes for children and students in the province; providing professional development for social work collaborators; strengthening propaganda in various forms; providing counseling related to social assistance policies, social work skills, livelihoods, marriage and family, employment, domestic violence, and sexual abuse; giving prompt support for those in need for urgent protection; continuing to mobilize social resources to help the disadvantaged; getting involved in disaster relief in the community; coordinating with authorities, agencies, organizations in taking measures to protect rights to live in safety, free from abuse, violence and neglect.

The center is in need of the joint effort of local agencies, businesses and benefactors; and enthusiasm of social workers and collaborators in supporting individuals, families and communities, contributing to creating a progressive, prosperous, equal and happy society for all.
