Due to the surge in Covid-19 infections in Khanh Hoa, the Provincial People’s Committee has decided to found 3 makeshift hospitals for Covid-19 patients at Khanh Hoa Hospital of Tropical Diseases, Venero-Dermatology Hospital and Hospital of Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases with a capacity of 300 beds. Since the foundation, the 3 makeshift hospitals have received and treated 180 cases positive for SARS-CoV-2.

Khanh Hoa Hospital of Tropical Diseases was converted into a makeshift hospital on July 6. Since 7pm on July 5, the hospital has ceased receiving new admissions and transferred in-patients to other medical facilities and 2 severe cases to Khanh Hoa General Hospital. Mild and moderate Covid-19 patients have been transferred to the emergency department for intensive care with ventilators. Shifts of medical staff have been arranged for the care and treatment of Covid-19 patients.

Makeshift Hospital No.3 is located at  Venero-Dermatology Hospital.

In addition, the makeshift hospital has been divided into 14 zones with 2 rounds. The outer is for the support of activities of the hospital and the inside is for the treatment, including patient reception and classification; and intensive care for severe cases; care for mild and moderate patients together with an isolation area for the discharged.

30 staff, including doctors, nurses and technicians divided into 3 shifts, have been mobilized. In addition, the hospital keeps connected with upper-level hospitals through diagnosis and consultation services via telehealth, zoom or zalo, viber, etc. To avoid cross-infection, besides performing disinfection procedures, all staff working at the field hospital are tested for SARS-CoV-2 once a week.

Experienced in Covid-19 treatment, Khanh Hoa Hospital of Tropical Diseases basically meets the treatment needs as a makeshift hospital. Currently, 80 patients, including 3 severe cases, are being treated at the hospital. The medical staff has mainly dealt with infectious diseases while Covid-19 patients have many other underlying health problems. Therefore, the hospital has asked the Department of Health for more specialist doctors, according to Dr. Nguyen Dong, Director of Tropical Diseases Hospital.

Since early 2021, besides treatment to skin, leprosy, tuberculosis and lung diseases, Khanh Hoa Hospital of Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases and Venero-Dermatology Hospital have received Covid-19 patients. Therefore, when converted into makeshift hospitals for Covid-19 patients, their medical staff have rapidly adapted to the move. The 2 hospital have suspended receiving new admissions, transferred severe patients to Khanh Hoa General Hospital, discharged mild patients and directed their divisions to monitor the discharged and contact the hospitals for any emergency.

According to Dr. Huynh Minh Tam, Deputy Director of Khanh Hoa Hospital of Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases, Director of the Makeshift Hospital No.2, nearly 100 staff together with equipment have been mobilized for the Makeshift Hospital, which has received Covid-19 patients.

The Venero-Dermatology  Hospital, currently known as the Makeshift Hospital No.3, is treating 72 patients. “In order to prevent cross contamination, we have founded disinfection teams and ensured appropriate arrangements of departments as well as prepared nutritious food for patients,” said Dr. Huynh Tran Tan Huy, Director of the Venero-Dermatology  Hospital or the Makeshift Hospital No.3.

Together with the 3 hospitals, Khanh Hoa Department of Health will propose setting up 2 more makeshift hospitals at Cam Lam General Hospital and Ninh Diem Clinic, Ninh Hoa Town with a capacity of 300 beds and another at the national defense training center (Provincial Military Headquarters) with 300 beds.

The Department of Health has built plans to transfer workforce and equipment from other hospitals in the province to makeshift hospitals. When Covid-19 patients outnumber the beds at makeshift hospitals, the department will suggest founding more makeshift hospitals located at university dormitories.
