For over 1 year, Nha Trang charity haircut group has offered free haircut to hundreds of vulnerable older people, poor patients and orphans. Their work has inspired benevolent giving and kindness.

Free haircut for patients

In late April, Nha Trang charity haircut group in cooperation with Khanh Hoa General Hospital’s Social Work Office and Trade Union members gave free hair wash and haircut to poor patients, their families and the paralyzed at Khanh Hoa General Hospital.

The hospital campus was turned into a makeshift hair salon divided into many areas for patients’ haircut. Thanks to 10 skilled members, nearly 300 patients had new haircut. Patient Nguyen Thiet Hung (Ninh An ward, Ninh Hoa Town) says “While in hospital, it is hard to go out for a haircut. We are so grateful to Nha Trang charity haircut group for helping us to maintain hair care.”

Tran Thi Hoa, paralyzed from a stroke, depending completely on the wheelchair, is so happy to get a new haircut, nice and neat, while at hospital. Also in April, the group gave free haircut to more than 100 vulnerable older people and orphans at Khanh Hoa Provincial Social Support Center and patients with mental disorder at the Provincial Psychiatric Hospital.

Social responsibility

Nguyen Duy Dat, a owner of Dat Barbershop, Head of the group said in 2020, the Covid-19 outbreak impacted many people’s life. He felt so sorry for sidewalk vendors struggling for their living. He helped them buy buying their items and offering free haircut. Then, he came up with the idea of setting up a charity group for free haircut. He shared his idea with his members and apprentices at his salon. Then, the group came into being with 6 members in June 2020. The membership has increased to 15. “I used to have hard time learning a trade and earning a living, so I know many people are still having a more difficulty life. With my haircut skill, I have the idea in order to help those in need and contribute to the community,” he said.

According to Doan Thi Thuy Loan, Chief of Khanh Hoa General Hospital’s Social Work Office, since the beginning of the year, Nha Trang charity free haircut group has cooperated with the hospital to give free haircut to patients twice. The activity is so helpful, maintaining hair care for poor patients and their families as well as inspire kindness.

Most of the members are skilled barbers and hairdressers. Many of them are very young. Since the foundation, the group has held dozens of free haircut days for patients at hospitals, SOS Children’s Village and Provincial Social Support Center. They give haircut to approximately 100 – 300 people/ trip.

For them, giving free haircut to the disadvantaged, poor patients and orphans is not only the happiness but also social responsibility towards the community. Through the activity, the group would like to inspire empathy and kindness among young people.

“I used to be an apprentice of Nguyen Duy Dat. Two other members in my shop and I have registered to join the charity work. Our first free haircut was done at Khanh Hoa Psychiatrics Hospital. We received much compliments from patients, I feel that my work is meaningful," said Tran Khanh Hoang, the owner of Hoang Barbershop, a member of the charity group.

Besides free haircut, Nha Trang charity haircut charity jointly with other volunteering groups has offered gifts and sought for donation to the disadvantaged, poor patients and orphans. The group has mobilized nearly VND100 million so far in support of traffic victims at Khanh Hoa General Hospital.
