The Interdisciplinary inspection mission No.5 led by Nguyen Viet Tan, Deputy Director of Department of Science & Technology, the Ministry of Industry & Trade had a working session on May 5 with the provincial Interdisciplinary Steering Board for Food Safety on the implementation of the Action Month for Food Safety 2021 taking place from April 15 to May 15.
 
Compliance with regulations
 
According to the report by the Department of Industry & Trade, there are 18,264 food businesses in Khanh Hoa Province, including 12,120 managed by the health sector, 3,024 by the agriculture and rural development sector and 3,120 by the industry & trade sector.
 
Implementing the Action Month for Food Safety 2021, the province has founded 130 food safety inspection missions. 97.7% of food businesses were recognized to fully comply with regulations. 15 cases were subject to cautions or fines totaling VND4.25 million on violating labeling. Besides, quick tests were done on 29 samples of food, showing negative results and 79/90 samples of eating utensils met standards, etc.
 
According to the evaluation of the inspection missions, despite great challenges and difficulties due to Covid 19 epidemic, the province has proactively taken measures to ensure food safety, especially in the Action Month for Food Safety 2021. Relevant agencies have promoted propaganda on the law on food safety and disease prevention through many forms; maintained inspection in order to promptly handle violations and publicized organizations and individuals violating food safety regulations on the portal of the province. Many food manufacturers, traders and caterers have become more aware of the importance of food safety and the use of ingredients with clear origins, meeting food preservation, transportation and processing regulations.

The mission conducted inspection at Sanest Foods Factory, Suoi Hiep Commune, Dien Khanh District and Hoang Tuan Coffee Joint Stock Company, Vinh Thanh Commune, Nha Trang City on May 4. The businesses were found to abide by regulations on product announcement, periodical health check-up, food safety knowledge training for employers and employees; applied the advanced quality management system in production; fully ensured good hygiene in manufacturing, according to Nguyen Song Van, Deputy Director of the Plant Protection Department Branch, region IV, the Plant Protection Department, the Ministry of Agriculture & Rural Development.
 
Since the beginning of the year, the province has founded 367 food safety inspection missions, undertaking inspection at 5,658 food businesses. 724 businesses, accounting for 12.79%, were found violating regulations. They included 15 subject to cautions and 40 to fines totaling VND882 million. Food products that do not meet food safety quality were seized and destroyed. 443 samples of food, including food products of agriculture, fisheries and forestry; food supplements, medical food, bottled drink, soft drink, natural water and food additives on the market were tested. 416 samples met requirements and 27 did not, mostly food additives used in pork rolls.
 
Inspection boosted
 
At the working session, the Department of Industry & Trade suggested the Ministry of Industry & Trade in cooperation with the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Agriculture & Rural Development would make some amendments to food safety training and certification requirements; have policies to encourage the development of clean production and safe food chains towards reducing small production and business establishments and markets that fail to meet food safety standards.
 
The Department also proposed continuing integrating financial support for food production and business establishments (especially small and retail establishments), investment in facilities, equipment, and technological innovation and large-scale expansion from funding sources for industrial and commercial promotion; the Department of Food Safety, the Ministry of Health would review and make a list of food products that need to develop technical regulations under the responsibility of a specialized ministry as assigned by the Government.
 
Nguyen Viet Tan requested the provincial Interdisciplinary Steering Board for Food Safety to continue strengthening the dissemination of State laws and regulations on food safety in the province; communication to manual, small and seasonal production establishments, thereby raising public awareness in food production, trading and consumption; supervision over advertising activities for food supplements; inspection and punishment for violation of food safety regulations in food production and trading, etc.
