Old wet walls covered with moss are replaced with new walls decorated with vibrant fresco suitable for specific school ages. The paintings depict environmental protection, the nature and school life, etc. According to Nguyen Thi Quynh Hoa, Principal of Phuoc Tien Primary School, Nha Trang City the school has started decorating toilet rooms with educational and beautiful paintings since 2011. “Our school toilet is decorated with colorful and meaningful paintings. We really love it. Therefore, we would keep it clean,” said Ngo Tuan Tu, a 5th-grader at Phuoc Tien Primary School.

With a friendly school restroom project awarded the second prize in the Khanh Hoa Green Environment Contest organized by the Department of Education & Training and Nha Trang University at the end of the 2018-2019 school year, Ngo Gia Tu High School (Cam Ranh City) has kept on maintaining the model.

Principal Nguyen Thi Yen said that the school has maintained a model to develop students’ good sense of hygiene. The school has asked all staff, teachers and students to keep school toilets in particular and the environment in general clean and beautiful, contributing to raising students' awareness of improving hygiene practices at school and at home as well.

Raising hygiene awareness

Efforts to improve sanitation and hygiene at schools to meet standards are not only made thanks to the investment of the Government at all levels and public funded activities but also proper management of schools. The task of ensuring adequate sanitation and hygiene is required to be among responsibilities of school leaders, staff and students as well. Especially, schools need to educate students about good hygiene and etiquette.

"With a large number of students, the school met difficulties initially. However, when regularly reminded, students have become more aware of keeping sanitary facilities hygienic and tidy," said Nguyen Thi Nga, a teacher at Le Hong Phong High School, Van Hung Commune, Van Ninh District.

According to Le Dinh Thuan, the Department of Education & Training will continue propaganda and education at schools to change environmental hygiene behavior, ensuring adequate sanitation and hygiene for students. The activities will include training courses on making plans on providing knowledge and skills to educate environmental hygiene to primary school children, organizing extracurricular environmental hygiene activities at junior high schools in the province, etc.
