Storm Etau has left a trail of damage to Van Ninh District, Khanh Hoa. Recovery efforts are underway to help local residents to return to normal life and production.


VND54 billion damage


The damage caused by Storm Etau in Van Ninh District is estimated at VND54 billion. The storm destroyed 2 homes, ruined 19 homes, tore off over 100  roofs, left over 1,000 homes submerged in 1 - 3m floodwater; caused severe damage to agriculture and aquaculture with more than 663ha of rice, 1.2ha of fish farms, 2.5 aquaculture farms; 550 aquaculture cages; damaged and sank 4 vessels.

In addition, the storm and flooding destroyed 8,970m of canals; eroded more than 600m of the embankment, seawater prevention dykes, affecting the agricultural production. Besides, the storm damaged more than 6,670m of roads and blew the roofs off 13 schools.


Le Hong Phuong, Deputy Chairman of van Ninh District People’s Committee says in spite of the storm preparedness, consequences from the storm has adversely affected the residents' life, causing flooding in many areas in the communes of Van Phu, Van Binh, Van Khanh, Van Phuoc, Van Long and Dai Lanh. Dozens of families were helped with evacuation by local authorities to safe places. In the most deeply flooded area, Van Binh Commune, Le Huu Hoang, Vice-Chairman of Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee directed the urgent rescue of 22 families with 68 people from dangerous areas.


Recovery efforts focused


After the Storm Etau, the district People’s Committee has urgently instructed localities and agencies to take recovery measures to facilitate travel and maintain other essential facilities such as electricity and water supply, communications; especially food and excommunication; and prevent the outbreak of infectious diseases in areas affected by flooding.


According to Le Hong Phuong, localities are conducting inspection and assessment of specific damages for support in accordance with the law. Localities and agencies are continuing the assessment of specific damages on transport infrastructures and irrigation works for funding support. The local Party Committees, authorities and residents have joined effort to overcome the consequences of the natural disaster. The district also instructed cooperatives to motivate farmers to quickly restore production.


The locality will make damage confirmation and report to the Provincial People's Committee for relief assistance. Representatives of the district and the Department of Agriculture & Rural Development have surveyed areas with damaged irrigation works to quickly repair and ensure production. Confirmed damages in aquaculture have been reported to local authorities and submitted to Khanh Hoa People’s Committee for assistance eligibility assessment.
