In response to the plastic-free campaign launched by the Central Vietnam Women's Union, the Women's Association of Ninh Trung Commune, Ninh Hoa Town has developed many models for the green environment, including the "Green House" model, collecting plastic waste. Initially, the model has proved effective, contributing to keeping an environment safe and clean.

"Green House" model collecting waste

There are 7 villages with 1,539 households mostly working in agriculture. The commune Women’s Association has developed the green house model since July to pick up trash, especially plastic waste to keep the environment clean in the 2 villages of Tan Ninh and Quang Cu, according to the leader of Ninh Trung Commune Women’s Association.

With the association funds and days of service, members, women and sponsors have designed 2 "green houses" with steel frames and corrugated iron roofing, 1.7m high, 1m wide, are moveable and convenient for storing all kinds of farmers’ waste. The "green houses" worth VND2 million each are put at the crossroads under the management of the village Women's Union branch. Every week or month when the "Green House" is full, the waste will be classified and sold to raise funds to help women and children in need.

The model has received positive response of members, women and residents. Nguyen Thi Thu (Tan Ninh Village) said, “There are no trash cans in many rural areas, so we are often careless about throwing trash. We are very excited about the “green house" model launched by the Women's Union. “The “green house” model is meaningful and helpful, contributing to keeping the environment clean as well as helping poor women and children. Therefore, I regularly pick up scraps and put into the house with the hope to donate to the funds for the poor,” said Le Thi Thanh (Quang Cu Village).

To be expanded

Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy, Chairwoman of Ninh Trung Commune Women's Association said that in recent years, in order to raise members and women’s awareness of environmental protection, the commune Women's Association has promoted propaganda against plastic waste; mobilized funds to buy and donate hundreds of plastic shopping baskets to members; and encouraged members and women to regularly join clean-up to remove trash and debris from the neighborhood.

The “green house” model is also part of the association's environmental protection activities. After more than a month of implementation, the model has proved effective, collecting a large amount of recyclable waste such as metals, paper, cans and bottles for fundraising. The model is small but meaningful, contributing to raising awareness, roles and responsibilities of women in environmental protection, keeping a clean environment and promoting mutual support in the community. In the coming time, the association will continue expanding the "green house" as well as other environmental models to remaining women's association branches.
