With drastic measures taken by local authorities, much improvement in traffic safety has been shown with road traffic crash significantly down in the first 6 months of 2020.

Drastic, comprehensive measures

In recent years, traffic has become a major concern in Nha Trang City, Khanh Hoa’s biggest urban area with a large number of vehicles and high travel density. Most traffic accidents in Khanh Hoa were reported in Nha Trang, Ninh Hoa and Cam Ranh in 2019, up by 20% compared with the year 2018. This year, local authorities have taken drastic comprehensive measures to reduce traffic accidents and thus gained some effectiveness.

Ngo Khac Thinh, Deputy Chief of Nha Trang City Traffic Safety Board, Deputy Chief of Urban Management Office says with determination to reduce traffic accidents, Nha Trang City People’s Committee has given guidance with various measures focusing on inspection and punishment on road space encroachment by petty shops, street vendors; cooperated with local authorities to deal with traffic offence such as reckless driving, speeding, drunk driving, illegal on-street parking causing traffic congestion, etc. Therefore, traffic in Khanh Hoa has much improved. Collisions and fatal accidents have fallen.

Strict punishment on drunk driving

According to the leader board of Khanh Hoa Traffic Safety Board, the reduction in traffic accidents reflected in statistics has resulted from the joint effort of all the political system. Reducing traffic accidents is considered as a major task taken by all localities. Khanh Hoa People’s Committee has issued many documents specifying leaders’ responsibilities and punishment for occurrence of high increase in traffic accidents.

Due to COVID-19, local travelers together with tourists to Nha Trang City in particular and Khanh Hoa Province have declined dramatically compared with the same period last year. Besides, local authorities have launched an inspection campaign following the Government’s Decree No. 100 on administrative sanctions for road traffic and rail transport violations. There have been some improvements in traffic safety, ensuring safe and efficient travel of vehicles and drastic drop in traffic accidents in terms of 3 criteria compared with the same period last year, according to Nguyen Van Dan, Deputy Chief of Khanh Hoa Standing Traffic Safety Board, Director of Khanh Hoa Department of Traffic & Transportation.

However, local authorities and agencies at all levels do not subjectively underestimate the situation. With the slogan "Don’t drink and drive", in the last months of this year, Khanh Hoa Standing Traffic Safety Board will ask functional forces to continue strictly handling cases of drunk driving law violation in order to prevent drunk drive and thus reduce traffic accidents. Traffic police will promote the application of advanced technology as well as plans to use video footages to handle incidents of traffic offence.

Khanh Hoa Traffic Safety Board has required local authorities to boost traffic inspection, focusing on roving patrols, especially at night to reduce traffic accident risks; Khanh Hoa Department of Transport to check and deal with spots with traffic accident risks; make timely repair and allocate funding to the installment or replacement of road signs, markings, etc.
