Over the past years, Khanh Hoa Provincial Trade Union at all levels has promoted resources to join hands to help poor workers’ children to overcome difficulties and pursue schooling.

Easing burden

Khanh Hoa Provincial Labor Confederation has just held a ceremony to give grants to workers’ children in pitiful circumstances. Nguyen Tran Khanh Du, 12 years old, Tran Dai Nghia Junior High School, Dien Hoa Commune, Dien Khanh District, is suffering from diabetes but his family is poor. His mom named Tran Thi Minh Khue says, “I am a worker at French Female Apparel Development Company, Ltd. My husband is working as a builder with unstable income. My child was detected with diabetes in September 2019. Getting a VND20 million loan, I took my child to Ho Chi Minh City for treatment. Now, his health is better but requires daily injections. My salary is VND4 million/month and my husband’s income goes to the child’s treatment. However, my husband is out of work and my pay is cut half due to COVID-19. The grant from the Trade Union has helped ease our financial burden.”

Similarly, Nguyen Thi Ngoc Cam, a worker at Quyet Thang Nha Trang Company, is also living in hardship. She gets a salary of nearly VND6 million/month and her husband has an unstable job so the family of 3 children is facing great financial difficulty. Therefore, she has to call on her parents-in-law in Phu Yen for childcare help while she and her husband in Van Gia Town, Van Ninh District take care of her grandmother suffering from cancer. After 10 years of marriage, they still have no house of their own. All the family income has gone to medical treatment of the grandmother and other daily expenses and tuitions for their children. Khanh Hoa Trade Union has provided a grant for her daughter named Lam Nhu Thao, class 2, Trung Vuong Primary School to partly share the financial burden and encourage the child in study.

Nguyen Thi Ngoc Cam says, “I am happy and grateful for the concern and assistance from Khanh Hoa Trade Union for my daughter. This is really great motivation for my family to overcome difficulties and provide better care for my child to get well educated and develop fully.”

More support needed

According to leaders of Labor Confederation, Khanh Hoa Trade Union has closely cooperated with local authorities to develop the Children’s Fund over the past years. Khanh Hoa Trade Union has mobilized businesses, employees and Trade Union members to donate more than VND2 billion to the fund since 2015.

From annual donations, Khanh Hoa Trade Union has held meaningful activities for nearly 5,000 poor workers’ children such as offering scholarships, bikes, and gifts on national holidays, mid-autumn festivals and grants for kid patients, etc.

A recent survey has shown there are still many workers’ children in need of help. 6 out of 20 children benefiting from the recent support program have illness that needs long-term treatment. Others are maternal or paternal orphans living in hardship. Each is offered VND1 million. As the fund is limited, more assistance is needed to provide the poor more chances for disease treatment and access to schooling.

The provincial Labor Confederation will carry out propaganda and mobilize the Trade Union at all levels to have more than 85% of members contributing to the Children’s Fund appropriately managed and used according to the regulations of the State. “We hope these meaningful activities will attract the donation of a large number of Trade Union members and workers to benefit more children, increasing their access to school and disease treatment," says Nguyen Thi Hang, Vice-Chairperson of the provincial Confederation of Labor.
