The World Water Day is annually observed on 22 March to raise public awareness of the importance of water in protecting health and sustaining the ecosystems on the planet.

The World Water Day 2020 reflects targets to raise public awareness of nature-based solutions to the water challenges and climate change. Hoang Anh Hao, Chief of Meteorological & Hydrological Office, Khanh Hoa Department of Natural Recourses & Environment says this year’s World Water Day themed “Water and Climate change” by the United Nations is designed to raise public awareness of climate change, focusing on the importance and essentiality of enhancing water resource security and maintaining sustainable water resources amid the global climate change. The theme is also meant to raise public awareness of the changing oceanic and atmospheric conditions that are reshaping the current global hydrological cycle.

The climate change is having more and more effects on the socio-economic development in the province. Khanh Hoa Province has taken several measures to respond to climate change. The province has directed crop diversification and restructuring and application of agricultural techniques adapting to climate  change, improvements in irrigational systems to cope with drought and flooding; and promoted research to get complete hydro meteorological characteristics in Khanh Hoa.

Under the action plan in adaptation to climate change, period 2016_ 2020, vision till 2030, clean manufacturing is encouraged to meet the ISO 14001, the international standard that specifies requirements for an effective environmental management system, together with making management and technical improvement to reduce energy loss, promote the use and development of clean, renewable energy such as solar power, biomass power and unfired materials.

Furthermore, the plan also looks to raising public awareness of the control and protection of natural hazards; defining responsibilities of organizations and individuals in the control and protection of natural hazards; specifying natural disaster risk levels, following on-site principle, raising community awareness via a project on community based disaster risk management, setting up flooding maps on Dinh River (Ninh Hoa) and Cai River (Nha Trang) for preliminary flood risk assessment to raise flooding warning capacity; promoting research and application of advanced science and technology as well as conserving and developing eco-systems to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.
