The 3rd Khanh Hoa Provincial Creation Contest on Environmental Protection Solutions 2019 held by Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training has received practical creative ideas from students, contributing to calling for joint action for environmental protection.

Many creative ideas

Nong Thi Ngoc Hoa and Nguyen Hoang Long, class 10A2, Lac Long Quan High School, Khanh Vinh District had an idea of turning used canvas into environmentally-friendly products. They collected canvas discarded around their homes, washed and recycled it to become backpacks and bags as reusable substitutes for plastic bags. This is 1 of the 5 products winning the first prize at Khanh Hoa Provincial Creation Contest on Environmental Protection Solutions for high school students.

Nguyen Khanh Huyen and Do Nguyen Bao Minh, Vo Thi Sau Junior High School, Nha Trang City with “Green recycling” products.

Nguyen Khanh Huyen and Do Nguyen Bao Minh, Class 6.9, Vo Thi Sau Junior High School, Nha Trang City shared an idea of developing a club named “Green recycling” in junior high schools, 1 of the 10 projects awarded the 2nd prize. The club was first founded with 43 members. After only 2 months, its membership grew to more than 300. Members have given their recycling ideas and designed new products which are to be efficient, practical and environmentally-friendly. The products have been sold to raise fund for poor children.

Out of 60 initiatives, there were also some environmental protection initiatives highly appreciated by the jury. They included underwater trash collecting machine running on solar energy by Nguyen Ngoc Chau, Hoang Hoa Tham High School, Dien Khanh District; hydro-cleaning for motorcycle engine by Nguyen An Khoi, Vo Thi Sau Junior High School; school W.C innovation project by Pham Anh Nhat, Ngo Gia Tu High School, Cam Ranh City; and a green minimal life fair in Nha Trang City by Bui Bao Ngoc and Le Huy, Le Quy Don Gifted High School. The projects won the first prize. Other projects such as marine environmental pollution solution in Cam Ranh City; using dry leaves of Terminalia catappa for surface water treatment in aquaculture farms by students of Tran Hung Dao High School, Cam Ranh City; and improving the learning and living environment at boarding schools by students of Khanh Son Boarding Ethnic Minority School, etc were found to be practical and effective ways to improve the local environment.

Inspiring creativity

The contest showed many students’ creative insights and initiatives that can help save the environment. Their small projects can make a big difference for the environment. Many schools made thorough preparation for the contest. Some products were recommended for further development and improvement to be applied for the contest for senior high school students, according to Le Dinh Thuan, Vice-Director of Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training. The contest was an opportunity for students to meet, learn, exchange and show their creativity through ideas and products to help protect the environment, says Teacher Dinh Thi Hoa, Hoang Hoa Tham High School, Dien Khanh District.

However, the number of participating schools was limited to 30 (with nearly 140 students) which should have been 500 schools because of lack of funds. Some products were found not very practical and useful in daily life. In addition, the contest did not receive much sponsorship from organizations and individuals. More time was needed for participants to prepare better for the preliminary and final round of the biennial contest. More thorough preparation made by schools is essenial to address emerging environmental issues more efficiently while seeking to develop innovative and practical solutions to environmental challenges.
