Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training has organized various activities at all 3 education levels to provide a positive environment for learners to practice and improve English communicative skills, contributing to promoting English teaching and learning quality at schools.

Variety of English activities

The third, fourth and fifth-graders of Dien Khanh Town 1 Primary School, Dien Khanh District have just taken part in a school trip to Phuong Nam Bookstore and Big C Supermarket in Nha Trang City. They had a chance to use English in describing their favorite toys, study items, objects and colors. Some practiced English in conversations between customers and shop assistants to improve speaking and listening skills. Besides, English library activities were organized outdoors during the break time to provide a friendly and fun way for kids to tell about animated characters in English.

"The activities have created opportunities for students to apply what they have learnt and thus gain confidence and become more active. We hope the reading class will be included in the school curricula to help pupils enrich vocabulary and widen their knowledge," says Tran Nguyen Minh Uyen, Vice-Principle of Dien Khanh Town 1 Primary School.

The interschool English Festival first held at Thai Nguyen Junior High School, Nha Trang City drew the participation of more than 1,100 students from Thai Nguyen Junior High School and other schools, namely Vo Thi Sau Junior High School (Nha Trang), Hung Vuong Junior High School (Ninh Hoa Town), Hung Vuong Junior High School (Cam Lam District) and Phan Chu Trinh Junior High School (Dien Khanh District).

12 vibrant and creative performances of mash-up dance, singing, story-telling, acting, music concert, fashion, etc brought great fun and excitement. The students were commended for not only their confidence and talent but also their English fluency. “Many students are talented and good at English. I hope there will be more opportunities like this for us to meet and practice English,” says Nguyen Thanh Ha, a student of Thai Nguyen Junior High School.

A school photo and magazine exhibit at Phan Boi Chau High School, Cam Ranh City was also an interesting and rewarding event for students to show and practice their English as well as show their artistic skills such as painting, designing and making handicrafts. They also had a chance to learn about other friends’ ideas; practice dialogues and exchange English learning experience. A “Learning English with songs” program is expected to be held this April, promising to add to the highlights in English learning activities this school year.

English activities varied based on specific education levels to suit every learner’s age group. At Dien Dien Primary School, Dien Khanh, kids had fun with the English Festival and the “magic box” game which helped improve their thinking and practice their English skills. Cam Duc 1 Primary School, Cam Lam had a program on vocabulary at weekend and class product exhibit.

Kids at Cam Hiep Bac Primary School, Cam Lam were excited about decorating their classes and school as well as playing the game “Finding treasure” and English race. Tran Cao Van High School, Ninh Hoa opened an English community room in its campus. Other activities included an English speaking club themed “new school year, new target” at Nguyen Thai Hoc High School, Dien Khanh; “Golden chalk” Day and the challenge “a day as a journalist” at Doan Thi Diem High School (Cam Lam), etc. Interschool English activities were also held at each education level.

Reportedly, the activities were designed to provide opportunities for young learners to promote their English communicative skills, help them more confident and thus improve the English teaching and learning. Khanh Hoa Department of Training & Education has also encouraged schools to organize various English activities for students, contributing to improving the efficiency of teaching and learning foreign language.
